quote TomT: "About losing the tackle - I worried about this and a few years ago started putting a cord on my box with a small carabiner then hooked it to a small D ring on a velcro strap on the thwart. It gives me peace of mind knowing I won't lose it if something happened. I know the BWJ sells these small straps which are perfect for wrapping around a thwart.

Also, I like to use 2 rods when fishing but will use giant rubberized twist ties (I forget the brand) to temporarily hold the unused rod in the boat. This way, if I go over I just have to hold onto the rod I'm using and I'm good. I hope to never experience this though..."

Really good ideas. I used to do that and now just take it for granted about tipping, but as new paddlers I could have told them what to do more. I always struggle with that though, people learn best through their own actions or by asking questions not by someone telling them every little thing to do----so I tend to take a hands off approach, sometimes others come up with better ideas than me. In retrospect I should have told them to strap things in better.

Glad everyone was ok. Sounds like the trip was a great success! I know quite a few people who tip their first trip (usually getting in and out of the canoe).

GOt back late last nite. Had some bad weather first few days, lightning, thunderstorms, hail that limited our travel. Took 3 days to get to Kawnipi :), we had 2 newbies as long as well so tried to tone the trip down. FIshing was good on Kawnipi, 20 feet deep was the magic depth for walleyes. Troll a flicker shad over 20 feet and always caught a walleye--that lure and depth never failed.

Brother and his fiance' tipped canoe right as they were landing on the nice point campsite in McKenzie Bay, brother lost all of his tackle (most of it was mine and my other brothers :) ) Felt bad for him but no one hurt most important thing.

SO started bad, but everyone seemed to have a great trip in the end.

I'll try to get a trip report in the next few weeks.

Thanks everyone.
