If we all dug holes that size, everyone would have broken ankles.

Went to Quetico this year for the first time. As part of the orientation we were told that the "Q" does not have latrines (no surprise) and that we were to dig our own. Specifications are: 24" square by 24" deep. I took them seriously until I went to dig the first hole. Now I am wondering if that is just Canadian humor or a real expectation. I also wonder if anyone on this site has succeeded in meeting this requirement before or after the necessitating condition.

Never ever heard that, and it makes no sense.

Canadian humor? they were (or are) at one time a British colony. expect some strange humor. although i suspect they were sincere, meaning yup, we really meant that impossible feat from you.

i have traveled in Canada from Newfoundland and Labrador, to British Columbia. it's a strange and wonderful country. the people are awesome, though the awesomeness seems to be related to the number of trees per square mile. on the prairies and the tundra the Canadians would give you the shirts off their back, or their car (first hand observation), kind of like the nomads of the middle east. as soon as you reach the forest zone, or more especially the mountains, expect a much more paranoid version. and in Quebec all bets are off. just know that you don't have to tip the waiters, they will go out of their way to insult you. it's a cultural thing, i think.

Sounds like a real job for a plastic trowel.

Never, not even close. I dig big enough and deep enough to cover period.

If I'm not mistaken you're not supposed to dig too deep since most of what breaks everything down is in the top layer of the soil.
