Jackfish	03/21/2008 10:04PM   Have any of you paddled from Beaverhouse to Prairie Portage? If so, which route did you take and how many days did it take you? Would you do the same route again (meaning the lakes, portages, campsites and scenery were good and you'd recommend the route) or would you go a different route? Did you fly in and paddle out? If so, which fly-in service did you use?
fishguts	03/22/2008 11:42PM   Jackfish, No....I haven't but we did do the Nym to Prairie Portage in 93. It was a great trip we got a van ride from our Outfitter (Don Belund's) and we came down through Dore and Twin to Sturgeon then Russell and over to the creek that connects up with Cairn & Sark & Kashahpiwi. We loved Kashahpiwi!!! We had a big southerly wind on Burke and were wind bound for a bit but had a wonderful trip all in all. We did it in 12 days. The photo is me on the portage into Kash.
Obergut	03/26/2008 06:27AM   We didn't see anyone between Suz (Darkwater R portage) and the middle of Kash. The only portage that I would consider a "never again" would be the one from Cutty into Sark. It went from knee-high muck cedar swamp to a spiral staircase of granite then down again into muck and up again, etc. The Death March was just that...a long walk in the woods. The reward for doing that one was staying on Delahey for a couple days. A+! Hydrate yourselves before doing that one. Other than that, they were easy to find and decent landings.
Jackfish	03/25/2008 01:38PM   Thanks for the feedback, FG. We were on Kahshahpiwi back in 2003, but only the southern portion of it. We came up from Side, portaged to McNiece and went on from there. Right now, I'm kind of thinking of getting to Russell and on to the west end of Kawnipi, then down Agnes. (For anyone reading this post, please offer ANY alternative routes. I'm looking for the best options.) Anyone else? Beuhler? Beuhler?
Obergut	03/25/2008 04:21PM   Beuhler here. I would try incorporating Camel, Cutty, Veron, Delahey, Conmee, or Burt in that route...somehow. It all depends what your looking for. There's an abundance of wildlife in those areas, great scenery, challenging portages, and solitude. Some of the waters here are stained, so fishing was above average for the entire day. Burt is very clear, but we didn't have any problem catching walleyes at high noon. Never stayed or fished on Joyce, but she would be a target for me. I like a good long portage, so I think I would get to Conmee via the Memory Lane or Death March and then east through Suz, Burt, Marj, Joyce and down Kash. I would be intersted in how you are getting a ride up there for a drop off. Cost? Outfitter/friend? That will be a great trip for ya!
Jackfish	03/25/2008 10:03PM   Thanks for the feedback, Obergut. Quite frankly, I hadn't even looked at the route south of Fred Lake, but that's exactly why I asked for different routes. I guess it will depend on what we want to do. That area certainly looks like it wouldn't be overrun by people, and of course, that's important for a wilderness experience. Any feedback on the portages?
