bendingbranchesbender: "Very nice! How long was the class?" Not sure if that was directed at me, but our class was one long weekend. Maybe 16 hours scheduled ?? And, you actually needed a little more time than that if you were to finish out the process, dipping them a number of times in urethane. Luckily, Peta took that on for us and met us with them at the Expo that November. |

I have been in the market for traditional wooden snowshoes and have come across several that do not list a brand name, only “Made in Canada” along with the dimensions. Can any of you give me additional information on these? For example: I could send a link to those pair of snowshoes on eBay, but I’m not sure if that’s allowed. Thanks for the help! Jess |

schweady: "If you ever decide to change that "Made in Canada" to "Made Myself," That’s actually a great idea. Hefty price, but that would be a fun project! |

ManMythMurse: "schweady: "If you ever decide to change that "Made in Canada" to "Made Myself," We made ours at the Ely Folk School during their first fall season classes. Not the simplest project, but if we can do it... Here they are, freshly laced, prior to dipping... And, with our instructor, Peta, showing off the finished product at her booth during that year's Midwest Mountaineering Winter Expo... |

CanoeCountry: "I have a couple pair from "Cabela's" that have the same marking. I don’t know that I have a preference in style, as these will be my first snowshoes and I don’t t have the experience to know what’s best. I was thinking Huron, Ojibwa or Bear Paws. I do know that I need a pair for a heavy load, as I’m 225+lbs without a heavy backpack on my back. Jess |

I just finished watching Winter Camping in the Boundary Waters, part of the Midwest Mountaineering Outdoor Adventure Expo series. Some basic info, some food for thought. |

ManMythMurse: "CanoeCountry: "I have a couple pair from "Cabela's" that have the same marking. You would be best off with ojibwa's If you weigh 225+. You need as much surface area as possible. Small modern shoes won't work right in light 3 ft+ deep snow. The one's weaved with Monofiliment fishing line tend to weigh less and clump slush less. Snowshoes need to be sprayed with silicon spray and PAM cooking spray or the slush can stop you dead cold in your tracks. Deep snow and slush even with snowshoes can be a slow slow go. Good luck! |
