I went out to my favorite winter camping site in the Hiawatha National Forest on Sunday and laid-in a supply of firewood for my stove. I plan to make a 5 or 6 night outing around Jan 1. This will supplement wood that I haul in on my sled (it's 1.3 miles on a logging road). If the snow cover is low, I can sometimes drive to my site in the winter. I have access to three lakes nearby for fishing.

Brilliant!
In all seriousness this is my favorite time of year by far and I am basically checking the weather hourly. The lakes close to home are still open but are ready to freeze as I saw some skim ice this morning around the edges. Supposed to get cold after the snow quits so I'm really hoping for some good early season ice. It's been a while and we deserve it. Hope for the same further north in the BWCA.

I've found that, in addition to the 1st recommendation from the article, a sacrifice to Xoggoloth:Dread Lord of Winter tends to be extremely effective.
