If you bring in your own wood, please make sure it is from an approved vendor. To prevent the spread of invasive species, it is illegal to burn non-local firewood in MN State Parks. You can find approved vendors by going to the Jay Cooke web page and scrolling down to the "Don't Move Firewood Section" and then clicking on the vendor link. I tried to provide a direct link to the vendors, but for some reason it would not work. Here is the Jay Cooke Link:

I would call the park since the website says the backpack sites are not available in 2013. They might not be open until late next year.

I did contact the park official before my inquiries here. We can cut dead or downed wood (of course away from the site).The dispersed sites that we are interested in are open. He did mention that others had winter camped there, however he didn't have any details regarding that. Just curious if anyone one had been out there this year.

Hope you have a great stay because I have always wondered about them as well. For one on whether it was worth the hike to the campsites in the first place?
I've been allowed at a state park to cut down wood too. Was pretty surprised but the ranger stated we could so we did. Made life easier.

Has anyone ever winter camped at the dispersed sites at Jay Cooke SP? How were the trails, elevation changes, water/wood sources?

I don't think you can gather firewood in state parks. Maybe the rules are different for "dispersed" sites but I kind of doubt it. So I'm guessing you'd have to haul in whatever you want to burn.

Nope, no firewood gathering even in the winter, so you'd have to haul it in. I've summer camped at those sites in Jay Cooke, but not winter yet. As I recall at least some of them are relatively flat trails to get to, but I'm not sure which ones are re-opened after the flood.
