quote Finnlander: "Trying to plan a last winter trip of the year April 5th weekend in the Ely area. Concerned about river flowage and safety.

Which rivers have a tendency to open up first?"

I know of a trip planned for that weekend...two hurdles/problems and you have to "qualify."
...1. You have to do the pre-trip hike.
.........Group dynamics and ability check. (This weekend I think)
...2. It is in the Eagle Mountain area.

You know you get that time of year,if your talking river systems, the ice can be razor thin under the snow(actually could be that way all winter) because it melted from underneath. Sounds like there will be lot of ice,but I would be wary of doing a river system or close to currents.
That said you can have a great trip that time of year when we have a late melt. Should be almost zero people around.
