Long pull across Seagull. With the haul up to Paulson you should try to stay light. Ski or Snowshoe? Early or Late season trout?

I went into Paulsen solo the January right after the blowdown. The portage was long, but not terrible and the views at that time were stunning.

Was in there in the middle of last January, but we went in from Glossy on the south side. There was no sign anyone had been in.

Sorry, I'm not a fisherman, so no advice that way.

Thanks Bear. I know of your winter camping legend through a visit to Dan Cooke last winter, and of course from the Star Trib article.

My partners and I are newbies but really want to give this a try. It seems like such a great next challenge!

Looking at February. A fellow who works at Wilderness Canoe Base (my daughter is guiding there now) said he has some gear and would show us the way.

I am excited.

And yes, we would be out for trout.

Our contact estimated an hour walk/ski from WCB and then about three more hours to navigate the long portage.

My daugher did that portage last month for her staff training and she said it was a real bruiser. And she's pretty tough!! She even did Stuart River with me a few years ago. That said, the guy who would go with us knows the way very well and that would be helpful. I'll update you when we make our plan!

I am looking at a winter trip--seems like a great next challenge--and I just made a contact with someone who can get me to Paulson (via the long portage off of Seagull). This person stated that the laker fishing there is pretty good.

Anyone ever been there?

My daughter is working at Wilderness Canoe Base and that would be our starting point.

Thanks!

I have not been there but have looked into it, from everything I have read the fishing is good but they don't get very large. It also sounds like the portage can be difficult which would make me nervous for the winter as my experience is winter can be more difficult depending on the snow depth. If you go I would love to hear how the portage went. I love to hear that I am not the only person already planning winter trips.
