DaveOR	01/10/2016 03:26PM   Besides illustrating several of Olsen's books, Frances Lee Jacques illustrated a companion pair of books written by his wife Florence Page Jacques, Canoe Country and Snowshoe Country. In fact, Snowshoe Country was written and illustrated by the Jacques while staying with the Kerfoot's at Gunflint Lodge in the late 1930's. Justine Kerfoot mentions the Jacques in her book Woman of the Boundary Waters.

campcrafter	02/25/2013 04:20PM   Reading this book I am curious about their equipment as I have found no equipment list for the trip. From the book I have found that they used wood canvas Peterborough canoes. They used three tents: Eric Morse used a solo "pup" tent, there was a Baker tent used by 3 men and one other tent used by two men. Imagine all to be canvas. They used down filled sleeping bags(which did get wet!) Ponchos. Enamel ware cups. Air mattresses. I also imagine they used canvas Duluth style packs. One picture I found taken on the trip shows Sig ( with Indian children) in what appears to be cotton khaki pants and leather boots. If anyone else has info on equipment used on this trip - lists, details, PHOTOS I would love to hear about them. OH and at a few sites they had spruce bough beds! ;) Blue Skies! cc

campcrafter	07/31/2013 04:33PM   Starwatcher - Just saw you posts That is so cool = thanks for sharing the letter I have visited the web site about Sig and also visited the Listening Point cabin in 2010. After reading the Lonely Land, I read Freshwater Saga by Eric Morse and then Death on the Barrens by George Grinnell. I recommend both. Blue Skies! cc

Blue Skies! cc" My friends and I read the book years ago, in the 1970's and it inspired us to take a month long canoe trip down the Churchill River, but took a six mile "Grand Portage" across the divide to the Burntside River and ended up in Thompson, Manitoba. Here is a copy of the correspondence we had with Sig Olson after we met with him in Ely to plan our trip. starwatcher
