Kanoes,

I have been trying to think of a book or books. I think I might have an idea. Light read, true short stories, and humerous.

"Poachers Caught!" Adventures of a Northwoods Game Warden, by Tom Chapin

Easy read. I like short stories like this. You can put it down at the end of a story. Some novels are hard to put down. Good bok for a solo.

I liked "Bush Pilots: Legends of the Old and Bold" a lot. Short stories by pilots out of Ely back in the hayday. Some funny stuff too about busting poachers and a great story about how these guys would get their girl in the plane and fly off to have lunch somewhere.

It's really a great read and by Bob Cary as well. Comes with a cd of interviews that Bob did with these old timers over a cup of coffee. Those were the days!

I'll second Canoerone with a Patrick McManus book. I've read a couple and he always make me laugh. I recently read: Father water, Mother woods : essays on fishing and hunting in the North Woods by Gary Paulsen.

"A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson- very funny book about through-hiking the Appalachian Trail.

"The Woman Who Married a Bear" by John Straley- first in a series of mystery novels starring a fairly dysfunctional backwoods Alaskan detective. I laughed alot, but then I have a warped sense of humor.

kanoes,
Glad to have you join us. You can look thru some of the previous posts and get a few suggestions. Also, for some "light" reading I list here a few for your consideration:
"They Shoot Canoes, Don't They" by Patrick McManus
"Northern Lites" by Jack Kraywinkle and
"Some of My Best Friends are Fishermen" by John Craig
