Round 2 starts Sunday afternoon and I see Ely getting 5-8 inches of snow along with much of northern Minnesota. It looks to me they say it is going to be very wet,but will it be snow or rain. One thing the dry early spring is over and there will no fire bans soon.

Headed in to Wood lake May 4th. Hopefully it's melted by then. If not I will make the best of it. I've had snow on 3 of my last 4 spring trips.

Went for a little ride around home this morning and ponds were froze again and like you we have a little snow.
Maybe that is good, last year the apple trees flowers came out super early and than it forze down to 23 degrees and the crop was poor. Also are oaks had zero acorns last year due to trees getting ahead of themselves than freezing.

We're going in that same week. Hoping for the best, but planning for the worst.

2 years ago, I went on Memorial day weekend. After a rainy Sunday night & all day Monday into the evening, I had fantastic weather for the rest of the trip.

Here is the monthly weather charted back to '97 with hi/low temps and accumulated precip by by month and day at Sawbill: Table with Nav by Month at left

talking maybe a major snowstorm May 1 with a half foot of snow, maybe 8 inches, or so by Ely. That is out a few days still, but it looks like it will cover much of the state,so something will probably happen.

Got caught in an ice storm that left about 3/4 inch coating on everything. Keeping the tent standing was easy - just jostled the tent from inside and most of it came off. Not a big problem as long as we stayed around camp.

The big hassle was getting home. Roads were like skating rinks. Had to wait until it started melting before we could get out of the park. I remember it took a couple of days.

FYI--- there is another strong chance of accumulating snowfall on May 1st for much of the same areas. Just a heads up--- from the NWS in Duluth-

"While it isstill too early to determine specific precipitation types for this
system, a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, snow and rain are
possible if the thermal profiles from the latest guidance hold true.
Those with travel plans on Sunday and early next week should stay
tuned for future updates. High temperatures will fluctuate through
the extended period, while lows remain generally in the 20`s and
30`s throughout the Northland. Despite the fluctuating highs,
temperatures will remain below normal through the extended."

Many years I would go up in Quetico June 1. I have had 90 degrees F. to 28 degrees and light snow at the extreme. The norm has been very nice temps with it being the change of seasons it could be rainey. Who knows? Variable season it is at that time. But it is my favorite pick.

Those Anoraks are warm. Use one for deer hunting.

Well Brainerd north we have ice-rain and snow mess this morning. I see Ely schools closed for today.

Ice Storm Warning for parts of the Arrowhead,, largely BWCA area. This is concerning for those with early trips due to the potential of portages being littered with tree debris etc...

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE...UPDATED
National Weather Service Duluth MN
243 PM CDT Tue Apr 25 2017

...ICE STORM FOR PARTS OF THE ARROWHEAD TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY...
AND A WINTRY MIXTURE FOR OTHER PARTS OF NORTHEAST MINNESOTA AND
NORTHWEST WISCONSIN...

.The Northland will see a complex weather situation tonight and
Wednesday. A surge of warm and humid air aloft from the south
tonight and Wednesday, will combine with cold surface air coming
from Canada. This combination will mean a wintry mixture of
freezing rain, sleet, and snow for much of northeast Minnesota
and parts of far northwest Wisconsin. The eastern areas of the
Minnesota Arrowhead face an ice storm, and will likely get over a
quarter inch of icing from freezing rain, but as much as three
quarters of an inch. Lighter amounts of freezing rain, as well as
some sleet and light snow, are likely for other parts of
northeast Minnesota, including the Duluth area, and far northwest
Wisconsin. Gusty north to northeast winds could bring down icy
trees and branches, and pose a risk of power outages, especially
for communities closer to the tip of the Arrowhead. The risk of
freezing rain to roads will be less than the threat of icing to
trees, because the relatively warm road temperatures will cool
slower than the air temperature. Exposed bridges would likely be
the first stretches of roads to see any icing. The worst
conditions of the storm will likely be late tonight through
Wednesday morning. The precipitation will generally begin to lift
out of the Northland Wednesday afternoon. Motorists should be
prepared for difficult travel conditions tonight and Wednesday.

Been in a snowstorm on Man chain one cold spring with a brand new North Face tent that leaked a little(end of trip sent it back to REI for full refund). Also been in other light snows in May and heavier winter camping.
But never a ice storm-that would suck with it freezing on the Nylon tent and ropes icing up.

What a mess if it was like a half inch of ice or more. It might be a all nighter getting up and trying to keep ice off the tent.

My oldest son and I were up in Ontario on Harmon Lake one year in early October, went to bed about 9 pm and when I woke up around 6 am it was almost hot in the tent, I had heard the wind blow pretty good all night and heard pine needles falling on the tent. When I got out of the tent around 7 am the "pine needles" were actually sleet, the whole fly was encased with ice, and the ground was covered with 3 inches of snow. We had a big breakfast and by then the snow had stopped so we went fishing and the Northerns were wild, but could'nt catch a walleye to save our souls. FRED

Winter Storm Watch

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
National Weather Service Duluth MN
330 PM CDT Sat Apr 29 2017

...LATE SEASON WINTER STORM MAY BRING SIGNIFICANT SNOW...

.A strong low pressure system is expected to take aim on the
Northland starting Sunday Night. This late winter storm is
expected to bring accumulating snow to much of northeast
Minnesota, especially in an area stretching from the Brainerd
Lakes Region, northeastward through the Iron Range and Minnesota
Arrowhead. More than 6 inches of wet snow is possible in the watch
area, along with ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch.
Gusty north winds will also develop across the watch area. If you
have travel plans late this weekend and early in the work week, be
sure to monitor the latest forecasts and warnings. It is still a
bit early to determine exact amounts at any locations, but the
threat definitely does exist for 6 inches of new snow or more.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...6 or more inches.

I think we're in the three to five catagory. What a mess with our ground pretty saturated already. Picked a good time to come down with pneumonia. Haha, just keep the fires burning. Round two is always fun, we got our belly aching down pat. I just texted my cousin the other day... dude cut your grass, it's sticking above the snow. He said he'd wait... I said, there goes the neighborhood.

Brainerd is right on the line and they keep changing the amount of snow every few minutes. Either way it sounds like a wet one. The weather or air feels kind of weird outside today, like something is going to happen.
