quote cowdoc: "White Pine on the bushwack portage into Hoare. There were a couple old ones on that ridge.

Trees like that were around probably before 1776 when this country was created. Heck than this area was called Ruperts land and under control of the Hudson bay company and the British until the Treaty of 1818. Huh, it will be only 200 years next year.

Dam, Doc, I think you got a picture of Sasquatch with a bandana on his head. That made me happy.

Oh man, I wish I had some photos of the behemoth white pines growing in between Agnes and Hurlburt Lakes. The biggest I've seen to date.

That is my problem,I usually portage the canoe and never put it down to take pictures, which is a big part of a trip, relax, observe and enjoy.

Always loved the photos of the big Cedar between Hansen and Knife Lakes or any other big white pine etc. on any portage. Makes you feel like you're going back in time. I know most all of you take better pictures than I and must have some big tree portage trees.

This big Norway Pine is on the Duncan side of the Duncan > East Bearskin portage. It's hard to capture the glory of these old beasts. There are a bunch of huge old growth White and Norway Pines over there.

When we were there in March, there were a couple huge white pines that had been blown down across and near the trail.

This one was shown to me by Tuscarora Boreails. It is located next to portage trail by Johnson Falls.

That is a cedar I believe. That big and such a very slow growing tree,I think some of the cedar in the BWCA are the oldest trees and like 500,maybe a 1000 years old?

According to Lee Frelich
University of MN
Department of Forest Resource in 2002.
Threemile Island has several excellent stands of ancient cedars. One of my
favorites is on a small bay delimited by a little granite peninsula about
50 feet long with six cedars all between 500 and 1000 years old along its
outer edge. These cedars have all the hallmarks of ancient cedars:

Maybe these trees burnt down now? I know the ones north of Knife lake survived.

Said to be the oldest tree in Minnesota. 1100 year old Northern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis). Basswood Lake.

You can just see the age there the way the bark kind of twists around and the big grooves.

Giant pine on the cherry end of the Cherry to Lunar portage. (talk about a rough portage) We decided it was at least a 3-hugger since the 2 of us couldn't touch hands reaching around it or even come close. We measure our trees in how many people it would take holding hands to reach back around to the first person....

Many of the Landmarks burned up in recent fires.

What is sad these trees are 200-500 years old and so few left. Once their gone there gone and few replacements in site-at least for a couple hundred years.

Wow quite a collection. Thanks.
Like I said I really like the old Cedar or walking thru a portage with lot of Cedar. Some very nice white pines also.
