Jaywalker: "Last year I recall he just wandered around the BWCA for about a month at ice out and I thought that was pretty cool. Now he's doing a 1,000 mile solo hike-ski-paddle trip from northern Saskatchawan up to near Hudson Bay. The video of Steger's day one shows that cool custom built Northstar canoe-sled he is pulling his gear with. If you are not familiar, it's got runners on the bottom for pulling, and I think extra Kevlar. He will pick up food resupply twice.

So what are YOU going to be doing to stave off boredom when you are 72 years old? "

Probably not this: 78 yr old kayaks across the Atlantic again.

It would be nice to see what type of workout and food he eats leading up to this trip.

I met Will many years ago at one of his book signings.
His face showed the scars of being in the sun and winds of both poles too long.

He raised an eyebrow when I told him I was from Isabella.

I have been fascinated by Steger's gear list. Yes, he does wear Steger Mukluks, as well as rubber boots with felt wool liners. Also love that on such a weight sensitive trip, he brings his Helinox chair. Am wondering what he would use a boat spike for?? Did I read that wrong?

I heard his interview yesterday on NPR. It sounds exceptionally adventurous.

Kick back by the fire and watch documentaries on Will, and all you guys... If I'm still here.

I saw his presentation on canoe sledding at Canoecopia this year and was in awe. To do what he does at any age is amazing but to do it at 73? Wow! I saw the article in the Tribune on his adventure but feel it should get national exposure.

I saw Will Steger at Midwest Mountaineering on Cedar Street in the mid 1980’s. He was with his dogs. I don’t remember any scars, but one of the dogs was heterochromatic.

Ah yes, "boot spikes" would make more sense! Thanks Boonie!

Yes, boot spikes made sense :). It was interesting to me that the boots he took were 4 sizes larger than normal to accommodate the extra insulation (socks & liners)! Maybe that would solve my cold feet problem ;).

Cough, Name dropping,,, cough cough::
Myself, and a few of my coworkers, worked the medical side of things for some of the Arctic trips.. Will Steger, John Huston, Toby Thorleifsson, Abby Fenton, all have stuck me as quiet and unassuming people, with a lot more moxy then I think I could generate.

I can only hope that I'm going as strong as Will is at his age..

Anyone else still following? Those of us in Minnesota may be complaining about the extended winter, but it's sounds like it's really pounded him. Deep snow and temps averaging 35° colder than normal have slowed him a bit and are at the bottom range of his gear. Talk about a tough hike!
