awbrown: "It's worth driving up to Grand Portage National Monument." I agree. I would also recommend hiking out to the falls from the State Park. That is High Falls on the Pigeon River. It is a half-mile paved hike from the park visitor center, and easy viewing, but the falls are really quite spectacular. |

I've had a couple of good meals at the Gunflint Tavern in Grand Marais. |

I really like Angry Trout for lunch or dinner in GM. If you're further up the trail hit up Trail Center for any meal of the day. Also Worlds Best Dounts in GM is also a good place to stop. After you've done all that find some place to go for a good long hike to burn off all the calories. |

I'm used to going to Brule and Sawbill, so I've been up to Tofte several times and have seen Gooseberry and Palisade head. Any breweries' that might be open in the middle of the day on Sunday? Waterfalls or scenic points? Probably won't get another chance too soon to get that far north so I want to experience something. Maybe eating in Grand Marais if there is a good suggestion. |

andym: "Split Rock Lighthouse on the north shore is an interesting stop. We've also stopped at some of the waterfalls but can't remember which ones right now." Make sure you hike the cart in campsite area because there are great views of the lighthouse and the lake. waterfalls |

-Temperance river and it's series of pothole waterfalls is right next to 61. -I like to hike up the Beaver river in Beaver Bay. There are a series of 3 or 4 waterfalls within a 3/4 mile or so hike up from the 61 bridge. More touristy and not free, but less physical, which may or may not be more to your liking after a BWCA trip would be the Gondola to Moose Mountain at Lutsen for some nice views of the lake and a snack or beverage at the mountaintop chalet. Can also ride the alpine slide if that's to your liking. Eating in Grand Marais has a few options, but if you've never been to Sven and Ole's for pizza, it's kind of a must do. |

If you don’t get that far northeast often, you’ve got to check out Devil’s Kettle in Judge Magney State Park. Great places to eat in Grand Marais include My Sister’s Place and Gunflint Tavern. Gunflint Tavern has a selection of good craft beers too. And yes, the Voyageur Brewing Company is open Sundays from 11:30 AM to 9 PM. Before leaving, go out to Artist Point. It’s the area beyond the Coast Guard Station. I think the double falls in Cascade State Park is one of the most photogenic in the state. |

Park along the Highway and hike both sides of the road at the Temperance river. Short hikes, neat sights. Take the short, windy, one lane road up to the top of Palisade Head. Big time views of the Lake and the North Shore. |

Armored: "The dockside fish market in GM. Best smoked fish on the planet " I'll agree that one should head here for the fish and chips basket rather than paying more for it at Angry Trout (ask for what's being brought in today), but disappointed to learn that they no longer smoke their own fish since being purchased by Morey's. (The smoked lake trout I got was still pretty tasty, tho.) |
