i also have one of those tables and it has a checkerboard top! he even included the checkers tied up in a bandana.

Quite a few years ago I remember Kanoes posting about lightweight fold up camping tables he was making out of 1/4" plywood. I did a search and can't seem to find any info on them. Does anyone have a link to his posts on them or maybe built something similar?

I found an old thread on tables. Kanoes talks about two different styles and pictures of two tables. In not sure there were any plans, just in Jan’s head. But you should be able to figure it out by looking at the pictures. Tables

Here is one I made from 1/4 inch baltic birch plywood and an old coleman stand.
Cut the top to slide into the back of a #4 duluth pack.

Thanks everyone...those were the tables I was looking for. I'm not sure why I couldn't find them with the search.
Going to try reverse engineering them from the pics.

I don't see why not. Some folks carry cast iron, including me. To be honest, I didn't notice the weight in the pack and it nestled quite nicely on top of an olive barrel we were using for extra food.

Ooh! I have one of those stove stands! That looks like a great idea for a table. Like how you cut notches for the stand to lock into so the table top doesn't go sliding around. What's the hole in the middle for?

The hole in the middle was an idea from Kanoes about using a camera tripod as a base. That didn't work as there wasn't enough support.

This is what we use. Very compact 2#. Cheap. Don't over think this one. This is very functional with a pack sleeve. Lightweight Compact Camping Table

So do you carry these tables into the BW? Someone said it only weighs 2 lbs, but 2 lbs is still 2 lbs. or do you consider it a necessary extra kind of like how I now consider a Helinox chair.

I personally wouldn't. For car camping though they seem awesome.

If we double portage absolutely. Makes cooking, eating, card games soo much better. (i.e everything is not on the ground) If we single portage NO, not even a consideration. As you stated, its 2# more that we can get by without. So it depends on our trip distance and schedule. Our 0.02

We double portage... so we now bring helinox chairs and TWO tables ;-) ... and lots of other things we wouldn't have dreamed of bringing 20 years ago.
As we have lightened our load with newer gear that is smaller and weighs less, we have filled the space with things we once though of as luxury items. We usually basecamp, though we brought all of our 'luxuries' on the lady chain last summer too. Just couldn't bring myself to leave them home.
We have a tree table.. made by fellow board member Jeemon (and purchased by fellow board member Luft as a gift for my hubby one year we were on a trip together for his bday) I use it more than he does... it's my morning coffee table and then becomes our charging station for luci lanterns and our goal zero for the rest of the day.
This year we added another luxury toy... a stove table. Which we LOVE and likely won't trip without it again. It comes apart and packs fairly decently. The stand is tall but it goes in our biggest pack. the top fits nicely in the back of the pack, same as the tree top table. The stoves are easy to screw on and off so when we aren't cooking with the burners, we take them off and use the table for other things. I don't seem to have a good photo of us cooking on it but here it is being used as a prep table when we were using the jetboil.
If we had more time in life, we'd make them ourselves but I am happy to pay someone else for the work and design time.
On a trip a few weeks ago, we were camped on the narrows between Lake Two and Lake Three and had fun listening to people paddle by... "wow.. look at that camp.. .they have a screen tent and a table attached to the tree..."

We take a Helinox hard top table to go with our Helinox camp chairs. Yep it weights two pounds. Yep I thought it was silly to bring a table once too but its so convenient...
One of the things Kanoes did with the table pictured was drill a bunch of holes, I think if differing sizes, in the base just to make it lighter.

A tree table...now that's a great idea! I could see myself actually packing that in to the BW.
