That new canoe is too pretty for that port side orange sticker. Ohio does check at landings and put-ins here, randomly. Paddled with a local group of kayakers, a few years ago, and once we all were asked for registration card and those without current decals were ticketed.
Happy paddling!

I've never carried a registration card with me even though I know it's required. I figured I'd lose it due to always taking everything out and then putting things back in. How do people manage this?

I usually put it in my map case along with the permit.

I am the same way. There are too many times I paddle our local lake with no ID at all. And different people paddle our canoe so the PFD trick wouldn't work. Never been asked and my guess is they rarely do unless something seems suspect.

I once had a guy tell me he remembered it as starboard is right because right and starboard both have R's. Priceless look on his face when I told him port also has an R.

Port is on the left... both have 4 letters.

Thanks. Odd how nervous I was trying to make sure I had it right.

DQOTD = Dumb Question Of The Day

I only ask because I'm getting ready to put my registration sticker on and I want to confirm things.

Is the below correct? On my boat I have no thwart behind the bow seat to make it easy but I'm sure I have the image off Northstar's site labeled correctly. Right?

That's a good way to remember it, thanks. I'm going to start using the correct terms but I'm wondering if that will do nothing but cause confusion when I'm out with my normal crew.

Luckily I boated with my dad when I was younger so I know the rules of passing and right of way, etc. so that portion of safety is in place.

Keep in mind if you ever paddle the boat backwards you will be in violation, the black helicopters will descend from the sky, you'll face a body cavity search, impoundment of your gear, and you will be banned from the BWCA for 5 years

As an Old navy guy... I was taught Port and left both have an even number of letters... Starboard and and Right have an odd number of letters. It always helped me remember when doing navigation drills until it was second nature... perhaps you will find it useful.

Funny you say this because I was actually wondering about it when I was putting the sticker on. Well, I wasn't thinking about the body cavity search, but the other stuff. Luckily I'll be getting towed to the Canadian ranger station so the helicopters will just have to hover.

mjmkjun: "Had my Prism hanging from rafters in the garage. I reached up and slap my sticker on the wrong spot but was never question or cited because of it.
Upon renewal, I placed it correctly (inside starboard option - Ohio) and from then on I slapped renewal stickers over old ones. Every 5 years I remove 'em and start fresh. "

I had considered putting it on the inside (also Ohio) but took the outside option that is allowed.

Kind of (sortof) like when people used to say "There is no I in team!" yet it started to get popular that there was an "M" and an "E" (for me) in there.

Yes, weak association but it's all I had.

You only have to put stickers on one side?

Lucky. I hate having to put those eyesores on my boats...just did it a couple days ago, and here we have to put them on both Starboard and Larboard sides.

If you do a search on my name you may rethink that.

But thanks, I actually do agree.

Just one side. And it's a nominal rectangle, not anything too large.

I'll take any cues that are given. Each time I walk past my canoe I say the four major areas (Bow, Stern, Port, Starboard) in various orders just to get a start. If I wait until I am on the water I'll screw it up and have no reference material to check myself. In the end I may be the only one saying it on the trip but maybe others will start. If on the water I'd like to act like I know what I'm doing.

Reg. Card: A zipped pocket of PFD or with your fishing license in a heavy duty ziplock or secret compartment of your Tilley hat. Personally, I feel it's ridiculous because (1) sticker permit validates dues are paid/updated and (2) a person could loan his/her canoe or kayak out to a friend for a day of paddling.
