snakecharmer: "Absorbine Jr. works for sure. We also had very good results with Repel lemon eucalyptus repellent on our last trip. But both had to be applied every hour or so. " Hear! Here! I use Absorbine also!

Buggins is awesome for repelling gnats. Absorbine Jr also works great. But doesn’t smell as nice and must be applied more often than Buggins.

I have read that Bengay also works, but can not attest to that.

Bug Soother works for me on gnats in Iowa... never tried it on black flies in BWCA, maybe I should. A smokey fire, temps below about 50 degrees also help. A light weight head net is great too! Just remember you have it on at meal time :-)

The maker of Bye Bye Black Fly just posted yesterday then had a new batch of spray. They were filling orders as fast as possible. Natural Oils no deet, very little smell.
I can't ignore them, welt up and deal with aftermath for a month or so. Sucks

I hate using bug stuff. I end up suffering until I have a fire or light a cigar. Every year.

On this topic I always admire Canadian friends who can usually just ignore them.
