WhiteWolf: "Interesting - though I work in the weather field for $$ and have seen the field be seriously biased for AGW over the last 15 years .. - I seriously doubt the validity of this claim ( pic) and if true- probably happens many other years and just not reported most times. Probably a lot of ice and snow that is not seen or reported in many years. I wonder if this pic is outside a hockey rink.

Enjoy the weather- it's the only weather you got. "

MPLS_Airport. Lot of monster snow piles this year and yes dirt or sawdust will insulate real good.
The old ice houses used sawdust.

I enjoyed this thread. Trapper7 I enjoyed hearing about your family from Ely.

Now we have the hate filled personal attacks. Thanks for wrecking another good thread.

Wasn't saw dust used to insulate ice back in the "old days"?

Her root beer wasn't always good but it was always cold. We could legally snowmobile to her cabin up until 1985. Those were the days, some of my best memories are from that area in the winter. "

Any chance you remember one Val Kern?

I know the Kern name. I remember my Grandparents having some Kerns as friends, I think they might of had a place on Burntside. Sorry but I don't remember their first names.

Enormous piles from the airport tarmacs, city snow removal operations and Lutsen ski area's snow farming.

A friend is going with me to bwca in mid August and asked what to bring for clothing. I suggested she just heed these simple guidelines (she lives here):

Right - their "snow farm" - also not without controversy. Sigh. I really was trying to veer away from climate change and human impact for a bit. Fail.

My grandparents were care takers for Sandemar (sp?) Lodge on Burntside but they lived in town until the late 70's and then built a cabin on Garden Lake. Anyway, my grandpa also helped Dorothy put up ice. "

My Grandparents were also friends with Dorothy from back in the late 40s?? They had a place on Burntside not far from Burntside Lodge. I was born in 1960 and remember her as a kid. My grandfather worked for the schools and had most of the summer off work. So we spent a lot of time traveling the b-dub in my early years as a small child. I only lived in Ely for a short time as a young child. Ely will always be home to me.I helped put up ice twice, I think it was 1984 and 85.

Sandemar Lodge is talked about in this article from the Ely Echo. "

Cool. I have met Larry Smith on a couple occasions. He still keeps in contact with my grandma. I wish I would have talked more with my grandpa about the area when he was still alive, but my interest with everything about the area didn't really grow until more recent years...

It was a cool spring with a lot of snow late. We had piles of snow in Rochester well into June where the snow plows piled snow from spring snow storms.

Put enough insulation on ice/snow it well last a long time. In this case hay grass.

I know of a old silo without a roof that has snow in the bottom of it well into late June most years.
