The other thread was getting very long so, with the news of Terry Webb's passing last night, I thought it appropriate to start a new one.
I was very sorry to read of Terry's passing. He and I had a little connection by being cardiology patients and we were able to commiserate a bit back and forth. My only opportunity to meet him got missed back in March as he came to Canoecopia while my wife and I were on vacation. Now I'm doubly saddened by that missed opportunity. Margaret and their family have my deepest sympathies.

Greg Webb, Terry's brother posted this on FB about 9 hours ago:
"We lost my brother Terry Webb this evening. His body just wasn't able to recover from the open heart surgery he had a month ago and he never made it out of the hospital.
Thanks so much to everyone for the donations, prayers and good thoughts. It means a lot to the family and it meant a lot to Terry as well; he just wasn't able to get on Facebook and say so."

This is so sad to read. I have known him from here for many years now. Such a kind helpful man he was. I met him briefly on Ensign lake to Splash portage one year. It was about to storm and I told him of an open site down the lake we just passed. He told me later after he returned from his trip that he was thankful for the tip because it was a bad storm. Paddle on my friend.

The paddling world has lost a great one in Terry Webb. I had the great fortune of being with Terry on his last paddle. We spent two days on his beloved Current River (with me paddling a canoe I had bought from him a year earlier) along with board member and his great friend, Mississippi Dan. He knew at the time he was facing this huge hurdle, but it would not keep him off the water. Around the camp in the evenings, he spoke of his paddling adventures and his plans to one day make it back to the BWCA.
I'm honored to have known him, paddle with him and to have been a friend.
R.I.P my friend, its all flat water, gentle breezes and blue bird skies now.

Never met Terry but I like to read his posts. Thought go out to his family and friends. I'm sure being a Royals fan this year didn't help him. I hope people have a sense of humor when I go. I hope he's paddling with good friends and family that have gone before him!

Terry was a great paddling companion and friend. For the last five or six years we did day trips on the Current and Jacks Fork rivers, sometimes every week, but averaged about two trips a month. Not only did he love to go, but he also shared pictures on Facebook, paddling.net and here. Last week he wanted to hear about my BWCA trip that I did the week after his operation. The BWCA and the Ozark rivers were special to him.
I would be glad to paddle with friends of Terry or others in this community. Dan

He must have been a very kind, patient and caring man to work in that field. My condolences to his family and friends.

So saddened to hear the news. I only paddled the Jack's Fork/Current with Terry once, but he made a big impression. He had such a big heart and made everyone feel very special. I can't imagine the pain to those that new him well.

Hans Solo" Mark, you and Terry would have had a special bond because first and foremost he was a canoe guy. He lived it, he knew how 200 canoes handled because he'd been in them. You 2 would have been everything anyone ever needed to know about canoes.

This is so sad. Terry and I have traded for his red Nova Craft Pal several times and I got to know him as a friend. Was looking forward to paddling with him on the Gunflint Trail someday. So grateful that for him this isn’t the end but just a glorious beginning. Terry’s faith has served him well and we’ll paddle together someday on the other side. RIP

I've read a lot of comments already, but I think this one really sums it up. Truly a quality human being.
I don't really remember why we started an email conversation, because that is very unusual for me with members here. But Terry knew that I was struggling with joint issues, and he was a sounding board for me when I had my hip replacement, even more so when my rehab didn't progress and it was found that I had to have a second (revision) surgery. We didn't "talk" often, but I knew he was there if I needed a supportive friend, and also someone who might understand some of the medical aspects.
When he found out that we were going to be on the Gunflint in mid-August with Anna (I told him early last spring) he said that they would try to make reservations and meet us sometime during our stay. We were both so pleased to think we could finally meet this special person face-to-face, and Margaret, too.
God is going to welcome Terry and say "Well done." Yes, a quality human being." You are a good judge of character

I never met Terry in person but I helped transport a Bell RockStar for him from MSP to another board member who handled the final delivery. This is very sad that he never recovered and I'll miss his presence on these boards.

A few years ago I was going to the Current River, and he posted a plethora of great information in response to my post. While down there, I'd watch for his canoe here & there, hoping to run into him, but he had medical issues at that time so no paddling that week. Would have been nice to meet him in person, just to shake his hand and thank him.

I can't believe it! I was so hoping he was out of the woods. Life just isn't fair, there's no doubt about it. He could tell you about virtually any canoe you were interested in buying, he'd probably owned one at some point in his life. He sure was ready and willing to help a fellow paddler anytime and anywhere. I can only imagine the care he gave his patients. I am beyond sad for his family in real life and his virtual family here. This loss is huge. :(

So very very sad, I was so hoping to not see a thread such as this anytime in the near future! Terry was one of those people you just wish you could have run into on a portage. My heart goes out to his family and my prayers to his maker! RIP

It's gonna take me a while to get over this. The last time we paddled together was at the fall Ozark Rendezvous, Pulltite campground on the Current river, I don't remember the year but it wasn't recently. Those guys are all excellent downriver canoe paddlers, except me. I mean, I'm pretty good, but not like them. We pulled into Medlock Spring branch to check out the cave. That branch empties into the Current at a 90 degree left bend, the channel is narrow and the water is screaming through there. To get out, you need to ferry back upstream and get into the eddy on the other side. I knew that and really it wasn't very difficult but I got cute and decided I could ride the eddy line and not have to fight the eddy. I was wrong, flipped totally upside down in 54 degree water with a huge root ball 10 feet downstream. My boat had righted itself and I had my PFD on or I would have died. I came up out of that cold water and could barely breathe. I was able to grab the side of my boat and work back toward the spring. I looked up and there's Terry, he suspected that I might do something stupid like that and he had lagged behind until he knew I was safe. Everybody gave me a well deserved good hearted ribbing about that, but I took it with love in my heart because I thought I was dead, and probably would have been without Terry. Paddle on my brother, I'll be along shortly.

This really hurts for me, too. I paddled with Terry and Maxhpp on the Jack's Fork a couple of years ago and it was the perfect paddle. We had talked about meeting up summer 2020 to paddle multiple Ozark streams - Eleven Point, Current, etc.
I think I'll go do it anyway and take his memory with me.

Opened up facebook tonight and saw the news. He was a peach of a guy. We did a trip to the Current last fall and Terry decided that even though he couldn't join us, he would drive over an hour each way to run shuttle for us.
He was a wealth of knowledge and made sure we knew where everything was along our route. He was "under the weather" and we stopped off along the way so he could get some honey from a guy he knew. He talked about his grand daughter with a twinkle in his eye. After he set us at Baptist Camp, he drove away and that was the last time I saw him.
I owe him a shuttle the next time we see each other.

I agree and so glad we did. We camped at two rivers and that where he met us. We loaded canoes and he got so dizzy and light headed that I grabbed him so he didn't fall. He said his grand daughter probably gave him a bug from daycare. She'd spent the night with them a day or two before. He said that honey would be just the ticket. He was going to stop at the pizza hut on the way home, because Margaret loved it and he wanted to surprise her. Dang, what a shame this happened.

I started paddling with Terry in 2000, when we got together, as strangers to organize the first Ozark Rendezvous. We paddled "many" miles together after that.
For those who met Terry only once or twice, or only knew him from BWCA...........
Let me assure you; you did NOT misjudge Terry.
He had a "real" joy for paddling, and he was definitely a "character".
He had a load of positive personality traits, and he was a real "straight shooter".
Farewell, and adieu good friend.

We definitely lost a good one. Incredible canoe paddler and just a genuinely good human being. It was extremely rare for a negative word to come out of his mouth, and trust me, quite a few words came out of his mouth. He was a big guy with a soft voice and he loved to talk, but he talked about interesting things so it never got annoying. I think he knew every rock in the Current river by name. God bless you, my brother, it's just never gonna be the same.

Dan, my condolences to you on the loss of your great paddling companion and friend. I counted Terry as a dear friend since meeting him years ago at the ?3 or 4? Ozark Rendezvous on the Current R. There followed many more paddling adventures on Ozark streams (Current and Buffalo River Rendezvous as well as a "make-up" gathering after a flooded out Spring Rendezvous("camping" at Terry and Margaret's and day paddles on the St. Francis--Baker St Park, and Big Creek ), camping/paddling trips on the lower Wisconsin River, one 3-day early spring BWCA trip and several DB Memorial Paddles on the Namekagon R.
I have enjoyed the photos Terry shared on FB of your many trips together. I enjoyed meeting you last August when you bought my Spirit II. I recall that Terry told you about the boat, including the history of the big crunch incurred from being pinned in Big Creek shutin. Same event, how Darryl and I lost Terry's new camera to Big Creek after he gave it to Darryl to take photo of his going just before the shutins and the then paddled on down. Hope you are enjoying the boat.
I hope to get to a Rendezvous maybe next spring even if I don't paddle. Would like a chance to see paddling friends and visit around the campfire, sharing stories. Or maybe some of Terry's friends will organize an memorial paddle gathering that I can come to.

Terry was a fine man and the embodiment of what the paddling community is about, or has always been about to me. My girlfriend's first ever float trip was an overnight, on the Current, in Autumn, with Terry. That's hard to top.
