I took my nephew on his first BW trip this spring. We stayed at Rockwood. When we drove past the Trail center I told him I had read a lot of good things about it and we decided to have dinner there. We both had the walleye and it was great. We ended up coming out of the BW a day early because of weather and stayed a extra night at Rockwood. My nephew asked to go back to the trail center for dinner and declared it the best restaurant he’s ever eaten at. He also requested we eat breakfast there the next morning. After eating he said I wish we had food this good in Massachusetts!

I stopped up there quick to see Carl and check out Rockwoods... from what I see Carl has done a magnificent job with the place. Not to disrespect the last owners who also were awesome people, but I was wowed as I drove through! As far as your night at Trail Center $99 was a steal... you should be in jail! Haha!"

I wish you had stopped by while we were at Rockwood. We would have bought your dinner/lunch/breakfast? at Trail Center, Ben!

We have stayed in one of the cabins back behind Trail Center and it was very nice. Almost too convenient to go up there and eat at the restaurant, tho! :-)

As far as Rockwood is concerned, it is just a good place all around. Haven't used the bunkhouse since the '90's, but the cabins are excellent places to stay. Well appointed and nicely furnished. If you stay for a week, it includes a canoe and paddles, and you can use the SUP's and Kayaks too. Mike and Lin did a great job, and Carl and crew are making it even better.

Sounds awesome! I definitely want to check out a few places (lodging) on the Gunflint Trail.

KarlBAndersen1: " Trail Center "
Had the collard greens with my meal when I stopped over for lunch during my trip this year. Best collard greens in the world! As a native of the Deep South, I was totally surprised that the best collard greens I have ever eaten were in Northern Minnesota!

I was just on the Gunflint in early September. Drove up the day after Labor Day, and planned to sleep in my Toyota Highlander that night at Trail's End USFS campground and leave from EP 50 (Cross Bay) the next morning. It was cold, rainy, and windy. Had dinner at Trail Center, and asked if they had a room for the night. They did!

Not cheap, but a great place to stay. Best $99 I spent in a long time. The rooms are across the Gunflint Trail from Trail Center. I stayed in #1. Two bedrooms with full size beds, with sheets, tons of pillows, heavy quilt. Heat was a gas fired "woodstove". Bathroom inside, with sink and hot shower. Comfy chairs and sofa. It was absolutely worth it after driving that day for 550 miles. No TV service, but they do have a DVD player and a bunch of movies you can play if you need a technology fix.

Came back in 9 days later from EP 50 at dusk after a really rough day of paddling and portaging in very crappy and cold weather, and stayed there again. No cell service, which is fine by me. If I go out off the Gunflint again, I'll definitely stay there at least the first night or the last.

They have two other rooms available, of which I think at least one may be larger, as there were 5 guys staying in #3 the first night I was there. The rooms are reservable. Plus, it is really nice just to have to walk across the road to get a great meal at Trail Center, which was excellent as always. I stayed in #1 both times. They don't serve breakfast until 8 am in September, but I had my own car food with me.

$99 is a steal! They do things right there and look for ways to make you comfortable.

I stayed in one of the motel cabins this week for two nights and can vouch for the quality of the stay. They are also pet friendly which was a must for me. I did some checking before I booked and found their prices to be very fair. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the food is excellent, both at the restaurant and the Camp Chow.

I was up there doing some sight seeing and day hiking and liked the central location on the Gunflint. It was nice to have a place to escape when the rain came two afternoons in a row.
