He's a fine looking and lucky pup.

We had our mutt DNA tested (it helped that my wife's brother is a vet) and got a totally amazing 3 page summary that tells you the exact background of the father and mother going back three generations along with the characteristics of each breed. It was like an instruction manual...people should come with them.

I'm gonna say shepherd body/coloring, lab face, beagle ears, a genuine mutt. They often times are the best dogs ever. Have fun with him.

Good looking dog Linden. Could be Shepard and or Lab. But at 25lbs for 6 months I would say there is some smaller breed in there also.

The thought that he was scheduled to be "put down" makes me sick."

Arctic,

I was a little unclear, the shelter was not going to put Ember down.
The shelter stated that the puppy was a stray and was wandering around the Fond du Lac Rez.
The shelter rescued it because the Normal Operating Plan for the Rez is that strays are put down by tribal police after a while.
(I have no idea if what they stated to me was correct).

We have had Ember for a week now and he is doing really well, he is on a good heal, sitting, staying, and fetching. There is a brain in there and we are very pleased so far.

An absolutely beautiful dog. My guess is Shepherd/yellow lab.

Agree with bellolake's comments about how mutt's often are great dogs. I also think he has a lot of beagle look to him.

Congratulations, LT and your wife on getting a new rescue pup. I'm sure Ember will make a nice addition to your household.

Agree, sounds like we have settled on Ember.
We wanted an unusual/unique, outdoorsy name. Not to mention it fits in with my career as a fire fighter.

What a fabulous little puppy! Congratulations. He looks just great. I'd say lab/shep may be most of him. One photo even made me think maybe a little husky for some reason. Whatever he is, he is handsome. Let us know the name when you decide.

Good size for a canoe partner. My girl is around 45 lbs. and when the boat is empty of packs I put 2 dry sacks of water in the stern to make it trim.

Wow! Cute pup. My first thought is that there might be some huskie in that mix. Does he have a brother or sister pup? Haha. I might be tempted but our cat would revolt!

Still deciding on a name, we are leaning toward Smokey or Ember.

He is a 5-6 month old male, 25 pounds and unknown breed. We were told half German Shepard and half Lab, but his foster parents were not sure of that and I am not sure either. Probably some lab in there, maybe German Shepard or Doberman, perhaps some hound.

He is pretty mellow for a puppy and comes from the Fond du Lac rez, and was a stray, soon to be put down. He was fostered for the last month before we adopted him. We rescued him from an animal shelter north of Brainerd and was the third dog we looked at. I think he will be a great addition to our camping activities. He sits and fetches and I will work on water training soon.

Anyone have any guesses on what breeds he may be?

Pictures coming soon.

Can’t wait to see him. Any idea how big he’ll be?"

The fosters thought 50 - 55 pounds, I hope not much bigger as we are getting older and Elsa weighed in at 85 pounds the other day.

We got the DNA test back from our newest adoption, the vet tech said that the company we used is 80% accurate.
We named him Ember, he has quite the spunk but is very smart. So much so, that we have been teaching him tricks like roll over, since we are running out of things to teach him.

Ember's test came back as.
25% Brittney
25% Siberian Husky
12.5% labrador Retriever
12.5% Flat Coated Labrador Retriever
25% Breed groups
Terrier
Herding
Companion

A real Mongrel/Rez dog, so far he is turning out to be a great high energy dog/puppy.
Hoping we can get him swimming next year.
Ember weighed in at 44 pounds last week. Guessing he will be around 60 pounds, he is 8 months old.

Funny, the wife and I both thought there was some Beagle in there too.
He is really smart and learns fast but he has recall issues, this is not one I am familiar with in training, since our other dogs had great recall naturally. Maybe that is a Beagle trait.

Congrats to you & Krista on the new adoption. Banksiana's guess would be a wonderful mix (shepherd-lab) but in the end, it doesn't matter. He is one lucky dog. Elsa must be a bit jealous....or very annoyed by puppy's rambunctiousness. All puppies are lil' rascals. :)

Ember weighed in at 33 pounds today, vet thinks he is 6 months old.
Guessing he will get to 50#'s or a little more. He is super smart, almost to a fault.
He fetches pretty good, heals are coming along well, sits, stays and has not chewed up anytihg in the house yet, Amazing. He is pretty much house broken.

We still have no idea what breeds he is made of, but part Beagle is alot of everyone's guess. A trainer we had him to last nite didn't think he has any German Shepard, but I'm not sure about that yet.

Krista wants to get him certified as a therapy dog to visit the less fortunate, she did that before with one of our dogs. He loves everyone and acts very socialized.
We are very happy now :-)

That's a great goal. Even a small dose of dog-affection for those confined in care facilities brings warmth and smiles in their day(s).
