Get out and enjoy it as much as I can. Also be thankful for how winter keeps many unpleasant things out of Minnesota like termites and fire ants.
Will also remember that -30 degree temps can kill up to 98% of emerald ash borer larvas. Might kill me too but that's another thread.

Staying home to snowmobile and ice fish January and February. First two weeks of March in Texas. Taking grandkids to Florida for spring break. The month of April will be Tahiti and Japan.

I have always loved winter in Minnesota, especially when I had snowmobiles. I would have dreams of early snow and was mad when it was finally forecasted and didn't materialize.
Then I had kids and couldn't afford the dollars and time away from family to snowmobile, so I started ice fishing and prayed for cold and no snow. But I kinda stopped ice fishing as a few of my fishing friends didn't have the time or had physical issues.
Now, as I enter my 50s, I just don't enjoy winter activities as much as I used to. I hike regularly with my wife and dog and I enjoy that a lot. I think the woods are really beautiful in the winter.
I also don't like wishing my winter away. That's half my life here in Minnesota, so we are going to Lost Wages for five days in November, Arizona for eight days in January and Hawaii for two weeks in March. My wife really likes hot weather and so we have been slowly planning our strategy to becoming snow birds as we get on in years.

Well past fifty here and look forward to winter more and more every year. If I travel in winter its to get to more snow, or new trails. Nothing better than skiing in the north. We've been lucky the last couple of years in that the ski season (in Ely) has included much of November.

Being retired, I commented to my wife this morning, looking outside and seeing the three inches of snow, I am so glad I don't have to bundle up and ride my bike to work today. :) I commuted for 25 years, missing only a handful of days. I have the best gear that kept me warm and dry even in the most bitter of wind chills.
As I sit here and drink my coffee, I can shovel when I want and then put on the clothes and we will ride our fat bikes wherever we want, have some soup downtown, hike the woods, whatever. I do not pay attention to the long term winter forecast, whether they are are accurate of not, it really doesn't matter. I'll take what comes and continue to enjoy the change of season, and when i need a change, i'll go southwest. :)

I broke my shoulder last thanksgiving while XC skiing so I’m going to keep paddling. I live in central PA and the rivers usually run most of the winter. But if it gets cold enough or the rivers are too low, Butthead has the right idea!

My perspective now is any winter I’m not going under the knife is not a bad winter. I’m going to enjoy it best I can now that I have the mowers all washed and put away.
Snow shoes are a lot of fun. Skis I’ve hung up... snow shoes let me poke around the woods at my pace and can bring the dog so she can do her thing at hers. Lunches on the trail can be fun and being able to let the fire go out and still come home to a warm house is going to open up new horizons.
Not excited about extreme cold, but pretty rare to have it windy when it gets -35 or colder. So I’d rather it be that cold then -25 and wind... or anything below zero and wind. Winter full moons are the best also... get up at 3:00am and walk across the lake with no lights... no people... just you, your dog and those pesky coyotes. Haha!

I don't mind the lake effect snow a bit and in fact I like fresh snow. The dog likes fresh snow too since we can both easily see where every critter is hiding in the woods. But if I actually knew we were facing extended periods of temps below 0 degrees F we would start a new tradition of fleeing a bit south for a week or two. My dog is a southern breed and was shivering in the canoe yesterday when it was 45F.

Stay at home until the roads are cleared. Sports on T-V. Reading and yard work when needed. Plan our next outing in BW. Plan our next long cruise. Last year was 50 nights to Brazil including Rio and Amazon River to Manaus from Fort Lauderdale and return.

Start fishing Dale Hollow earlier...........prob 2-3 weeks earlier. Stop fishing by end of December, prob no Jan or Feb trips, which is good since, I'm going to Hawaii in Feb for 3 weeks :) :)
Besides that , I will bitch about the cold until about May, and then bitch about how warm it is getting :) :) .

I like that... while everyone thinks they are seeking hygge in warmer climates, you and it seems most here seek it by a nice fire in the woodstove. Winter is a great time for solitude and hygge!!! Well and a time to plan, prepare and pack for the next years adventures. I enjoy winter, but in my old age I need a warm place to warm up. Had I known about the sleds, tents and things for winter camping I’d have been all over that. But nestled in the north woods I do what I can and then warm by my fire.

When I was younger, winter didn't bother me. Now that I am older, I kind of grit my teeth and hope it goes by fast. We usually run on down to the Caribbean in February for a week or two, snorkeling for me, and beach-bumming for the wife. And we also look at property and employment opportunities, since we may just retire down there, hurricanes be damned. But in the meantime, the grandkids and I will probably hit some good sledding hills, though that will probably be ending since they are getting older and outgrowing that activity.

When I still lived back in Wis. I used to go to the cabin up north. One of the things I remember most in the winter, is how quiet it is during a snow fall. I used to get up from bed to unplug the electric clock in the kitchen. It was so quiet I could hear it run!

Come about February I’ll be hooking up to our 4 season camper and heading south. We plan on at least a month in Arizona, and New Mexico. Only thing I will have to be worried about is cactus, rattlers, and frozen Margaritas.

Be careful of all the orange clad folks. Not enough to ski here, but still nice. This keeps up we’ll be ice fishing before thanksgiving.

Man, sounds like you're living the dream. Having some flex in the schedule seems to make snow-moving less onerous.

Go skiing! It's amazing what two sticks on your feet can do to turn your perspective of a "bad winter" into a "great winter". Either cross country or downhill, both have the same effect.

I have kids in winter activities, so spend a lot of time at hockey games, ski meets, and show choir contests. We are an outdoor winter family, so we are frequently skiing/snow boarding, Nordic skiing, ice fishing, and skating on the lake during off nights and weekends. One of my favorite things in winter to do is sit on the deck in the hot tub and look out on the lake and stars while having a cold one. Cold and snow doesn't bother me as long as it doesn't have too much of a negative affect on the above.

I was introduced to these last year on the Uller while I plodded along on my snowshoes and a buddy used the skis. He had 145 cm. I ordered the 125 cm. Another "tool" in the winter toolbox!

I like the SW wilderness and have been looking for new places to see. Would you recommend Santa Rita mountains?
Anyone spend time in SW New Mexico, like Silver City area?

A "bad winter" for myself and family =; time outdoors enjoying winter- camping, hikingm hot tenting it etc.Here in C.IA, winter only lasts half as long and half as intense as the winters I grew up with in the Twin Cities. It's actually funny what people in IA ( south of Hwy 30) think to be a "BAD" winter compared to areas further N- esp MN> To me- I'd much rather enjoy any type of winter weather rather than crap summers down here in IA (too much heat/humidity) - but hey- to each their own.
