Thanks for the replies and comments. i know what this gear is worth, in the excellent condition it is in. some have reached out to me and have inquired and when the time comes for my wife and me to sit down and look over what we have excess of, i will contact interested parties with what i have and post it here on the For Sale forum or the local paper, or both. what i really do not want to do is ship anything as there is just too much to bother boxing, wrapping, and shipping.

i see now that i need a list of items. that would be helpful for all, so that is what i will do,

thanks for your help with this, you have helped. :) pardon me while i stumble along with this lol. :)

Putting away my gear I too noticed an accumulation of gear that exceeds any future use. Some has value, but much would be free at any decent garage sale. Which is where I got much of my gear in the beginning. I suspect I am not the only flying moose with trash that would be someone else's treasure.
Check with some of the local dealers, some sponsor gear swaps and sales. Put my email on the list and I will put together a list of some of the gear I will not be using.

I get up to Decorah every now and then, and I already bought that paddle from you. Don't really need anything, but we could meet at pulpit rock for a beer.

Please add me to your list. I'm in the I.C./C.R. area. I know some younger folks that are also still accumulating quality gear for tripping and may be interested.

thanks for all the replies. comments and suggestions. wife and i will put a list together. the bulk of the gear is in excellent condition, as it should be that i only use it a couple times a year, and correct this won't be a quote garage sale where people put low low prices on things to get rid of it, i can bargain, but i know i will have a fair price on the gear. now i need some free time, this retirement life is busy :)

You bet! - you've got my phone number, I'd be happy to pop by and peruse, just let me know...and we STILL need to have that beer!

My experience has been this- if you have a $100 item that you want to get rid of, good working order and all, and you slap a $20 price tag on it to make sure you sell it, every person will first offer you $10 (or less). Garage sales are great for buyers (bargain hunters), but for sellers of quality items, other methods that you mention will net you more return for very little extra effort. "

I wholeheartedly agree. I admit I am one of those bargain hunters. Put a realistic price on items, something like 50% of retail to begin with and go from there.

Btw, I am close to Decorah. :)

Why not set up a paddle/camp out/ swap somewhere next spring? Upper Iowa River. Paddle. Campout. Potluck. Swap Meet.

Bannock and Dwnstrm have a good idea. With the Rockford Spring wing uncertain as I believe the park was sold, a spring wing in NE Iowa sounds pretty good. The campground we used for the Quad Cities group could accommodate a pretty good sized crowd and is right on the river. Including a swap meet would only increase my interest. I am kinda looking for a paddle...and then maybe...

I'm throwing this out there to get some input.

I have way too much canoe gear to list items on this website or the local paper. One idea is to have a garage sale here in Decorah, have the items laid out and see what happens. I could advertise it here and in my local paper or I could list the items here, you can choose what you want, and if you are close to Decorah, you could come and get it or we could meet.

As you can tell, with our most recent purchase of our teardrop, the bikes and hiking shoes will be getting the most use. It's going to be very hard for me to go on canoe trips knowing I have the camper and my wife at home who wants to see more of the U.S., as do I.

I have spent 30 years in the north country of Minnesota and Wisconsin. There's a lot more to see so this good quality gear needs to go away.

I would hang onto some gear, but not much, just enough to do a bit of paddling. Not sure when this will happen, but it will.

It's a good time. you know when you know, and it is now.

Thanks for reading. :)

Hey bwcasolo,
I live about 1 1/2 hrs from you and might be interested in some of your gear. Our group is only slightly younger than you and self outfitted for years, but I am a gear junkie, so you never know. We also camp in "Yellow River Forest" near Harpers Ferry a couple times a year, so I am familiar with the area. Shoot me an e-mail if you like and we'll see what happens.

I don't know how you treat your gear, but none of the stuff I have is trash. I have tents, boots, bags, stuff sacks, water systems, stoves, whatever......but I don't believe any of it is garbage.

That is one of the reasons I have such a hard time selling it. A 300 dollar, new tent 15 years ago, and in FANTASTIC shape is still worth 40-50 bucks in my mind. I won't sell it at garage sell prices. Same thing goes for nearly all of my fishing equipment.

I told my wife when I'm dead and gone, All my fishing gear should be given to my friends...and alternatively donated to a school if it holds any value.

With regards to my Canada gear.........I will eventually donate all of it to a boy scout or girl scout troop, or my local church.........

Geo

One of the AWESOME parts of this site are the friendships that are created........A few years ago , when my daughters were done going to the BWCA, I asked folks here if the wanted gently used gear. Some of the stuff had only been worn a couple times. I had many, many folks with kids interested......

I ended up giving it all to 1 or 2 people and I like to think that helped folks take kids to the woods.
