Interesting juxtaposition of the "Good Samaritin" in front of some rifle ammunition. ;)

I am jealous of your bear skull. The best I have found is that of a coyote and my wife will not let it into the house.

Fantastic. Thank you very much! Yes, for some reason the camera angle makes it look really large. But the skull was not large at all. So, raccoon it seems to be!! Thank you, all!

It's raccoon. A bear skull would have more of a crest on the back of the skull and would have a little more "gap" behind the canines. The canines would also follow the curve of the skull more whereas these canines are a bit more perpendicular to the skull (for lack of a better description).

Greetings from the heart of winter!

(Well, maybe not yet, but it sounds very dramatic to start a post that way.)

I found a skull in my forest meanderings today. Any guesses on what the animal is?

Hey, I’m a nurse. With proper care, I think he has a chance.

I thought it looked like a Bear skull. Under further review from the google I think it might be a raccoon skull.

Portage99: "We don’t have wild boar and typically don’t have bear. It would be highly unlikely (although not impossible). I’ve heard of one bear about 100 miles away. It’s a small skull, about the size of my palm. My first thought was coyote?? But when I google images of coyote skull, it doesn’t look quite right."

Then it's a raccoon. I thought it looked bigger than that compared to the rails of your pickup bed, but if you say it's the size of the palm of your hand, then yes, raccoon. Somewhat related to bears so their skulls look similar.

I also thought bear cuz of the shape and the teeth and eye sockets. I thought a raccoon had a rounder head

Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate it. I knew someone or multiple someones on this board could tell me.

Funny story on how I found it. I was hiking and had to go pee (can I say that on the internet?). I found a dead tree to crouch behind. When I went to stand up, I looked down and the skull was right below me, upside down! So, it kind of looked like human teeth staring up at me! I quickly saw the rest of the skull, but for a moment I was like, "uh oh".

Cool find!

If he were fully dead "all you can do is go through his pockets and look for loose change"

Well, I started an IV-got some fluids in him and he is doing great. Turns out he was just a little dehydrated.
