I'd go the St Paul route and take 35E when it splits by Burnsville. 35W has a handful of projects going on from Burnsville to Rush City and it will vary from alternating lane closures to PITA detours. Just stay on 35E North through and past downtown St Paul, and eventually it becomes 35 again.
I'm not sure what your plans are, but curfews are still in affect in metro communities from 10pm-4am. No cars allowed on the streets unless you're an essential worker coming/going to work. I'd be sure to gas up well south of the metro and avoid getting off the freeway.
You will have slow downs on 35 from Harris to Rush City and a bit north of there as they have been repaving an 8-mile stretch there. It's not all that bad, just a minor inconvenience -- 15 minutes or so lost.

I use 35E all the time, although the speed limit is 45, I'd say that is the minimum speed anybody goes, most traffic is doing 10-15 over, which is no different than any other freeway
I'm not encouraging speeding, just stating a fact

Thanks for the reply. What do you mean by if I get stopped tell them I’m not from around here? Are you talking about speeding? Or is it illegal to pull a trailer through that area. Someone above mentioned a weight limit in a certain section of 35 E. I have a f250 that weighs around 6000lbs and the camper is just shy of 5000lbs dry. I’m guessing the weight limit is to keep semi traffic away but wondering if they don’t want pickups and trailers traveling there.

Yes there is a weight limit on that stretch of road. Its considered a parkway thats why it has a 45mph limit and weight restriction. So I was told one time.
You could be over that limit with a f250 and your trailer. I'll try look next time I go up 35e and see what the restrictions are. Have couple jobs I've been working on In that area.

It depends on when you plan on driving through. Morning or early afternoon and you’re probably fine (I’d take 35E over 35W). Later in the day is a crapshoot. Highways have been shutdown as early as 5:00 pm.

I avoided I-35W even before the current unpleasantness due to some ongoing construction projects south of downtown Minneapolis. If you are coming up I-35 you can take I-35E and pass through St. Paul. Or you can take one of the other major north-south running highways west of downtown Minneapolis like MN-100 or I-169. Last summer I used MN-100 & I-694 a lot as an alternate to I-35W when I headed to northern MN.

as for the speed limit, do the same speed as everyone else, which will likely be 55-60 mph, although pulling a large trailer might make you stand out more, when I drive my bright red Corvette through there I never drive faster than everybody else, giving tickets is like fishing, the attractiveness of the bait/presentation
it's only a short distance and is the shortest way through TC area using the freeways, and no construction, and the biggest plus NOT Mpls
52 is an option if the practice freeway is a no go for your rig, it will take you an extra 5 minutes, it is 3 miles longer and is much more prone to traffic jams than 35E, but it is still better than 35W

I use it often during winter months and it is pretty up to date with car crash locations. (spin outs on snow/ice)
You can even view current cameras along the route to 'see' conditions for yourself.

Sounds like there's construction on 35W south of 494? My non-cities route has usually been something like Hwy 14 west to New Ulm and north on 15 to St. Cloud. Thoughts on either? (our BW or Q trip this year isn't until late summer/early fall)

Only the freeways inside the I494/I694 loop have been closed. If you are worried about closures, from I35 take I35E north heading towards St. Paul.
From there, exit going east on I494 at the Eagan/Mendota Heights border. When you cross the Mississippi at South St. Paul I494 turns to the north. There is some construction in Woodbury related to the freeway interchange with I94.
I494 becomes I694 when it crosses that interchange. Keep heading north on I694 through Oakdale. I694 turns west at Pine Springs/White Bear Lake.
Exit back onto north bound I35E in White Bear Lake. I35E and I35W merge back together in Columbus.

The freeway isn't monotonous? I get it though, usually quicker, but if you get caught in one of those two lanes down to one lane jams that backs up for a couple miles and moves at a snails pace, I'll take a two lane every time. Anybody who can take 53 through WI, should.

At that time morning you should sail right though St.Paul
Just remember when you get the end of 52 in Downtown St. Paul. Stay in the middle lane on the Bridge to hit 94 west / 35 north exit

Theres a weight restriction from where Hwy 5 crosses 35E by the river to downtown St. Paul where it meets 94. And the speed limit though there is also 45mph
Think its around 8000# not sure tho
