I'll miss visiting with all of you, but know how it goes, this year. Hopefully, by next fall, we will have some better times, for social stuff. All I did this summer was solo; I like that, too, but miss the company. Get tired of my own stories:)

Heading out tomorrow to check out the Clayton County sites and spend some time enjoying a drive/hike up to the MI UP and back home next week.
If we are going to have a meet up we probably should set a date/location. I will post feedback on the Clayton County sites when I return.

Godspeed, Ben. I don't know if I can make this one, til there is some date, but Clayton County is darn pretty.

I would most likely be able to make it the 17th-18th or the following weekend

I would like to attend. Would there be any interest in the Turkey River or Upper Iowa River? We just finished an overnight paddle from Elkader on the Turkey and it was simply beautiful. Clayton County has several primitive camp grounds along the river.

A quick check verifies great options in Clayton County. I am in anytime after 10/15. Those of you with crops, any estimates yet? And anyone closer to that area or with experience willing to pick a site for us?

Ben, thanks for scouting. Clayton County has about 6 primitive camp grounds on the Turkey River. All of them are first come first served. The largest I saw listed had 7 sites (next to the Big Spring trout hatchery.) We drove through the Motor Mill campground. It is a nice open site at a good location on the river. I don't recall seeing trees for hammocks.
Elkader has a nice city campground on the river with free fire wood, but there are no trees.

In Elgin, there is a large Fayette County campground. We used to camp there in Boy Scouts and I think there are plenty of trees there.

Any thoughts on whether or not the fall meet up is going to happen?

I'm canoe camping on the Upper Iowa this weekend. I will check out a few locations there. Randy's Bluffton Store might be the best option on the Upper River.
I talked to Randy on my last paddle. $15 per tent but no charge for visitors not spending the night. Plenty of trees along the river.

The Kendallville campground was only open to RV's due to Covid. No tent camping this year.

I checked the IA DNR website. The campgrounds at McBride are closed for the season due to the derecho damage. So lets find another place. Who else is interested?

How about the Middle Amana City park? The Iowa River and the lily pond are nearby.

I checked out Backbone State Park, nice with many options, and Motor Mill, not bad, but the camp area looked rough, few trees. Construction on the road.
We met along the upper Iowa before, a good option.
From my observation the farmers will be at it awhile and most of us seem to have a hard time getting away. Unless there is a strong desire for something this year let's plan strong for a McBride meet in October, 2021.
The three days spent in the maple belt of Wisconsin and Michigan's UP was fabulous.

Thanks for all the leg work Ben! I too have wondered about Backbone and how close the water is from the primitive camping... I may have to wander up that way some time.
It looks like we are running out of time this year so Macbride 2021 here we come.
