Kendra: "HighnDry: "Technically, you leave the bwca at North Fowl and then head on down to the Pigeon via South Fowl. At that point I'm guessing you are in SNF until you hit Fort Charlotte and the Grand Portage Reservation which the portage runs through. I'm reading that off a couple of maps but I stand open to correction.
It shouldn't be a problem if the above is correct---you're not heading back into the BWCA after you leave it, for example. You are just continuing onward."
Yes you leave the BWCA and don't reenter. "
Very cool. Looks like quite the beast but my travel buddy and I are looking to check this box. Of course you have checked a hell of a bigger box than us :)

It took me several days to recover from the challenge. When she finished, she went back and did the hard part over. Then just looked like she had been for a walk in the park.
Thanks for the write-up.

Eons ago, when mastodons still walked the world, a deep, disembodied voice said to the great, advancing glacier,"If you build it, she will come and paddle and portage it."
So, the glaciers dug deep and filled high and faded away, and sure enough, she came and she paddled and she portaged and she paddled.
And all is good.

Wow, they actually put the article in the paper! Kendra was reluctant to let me write about her adventure, let alone put it in the paper. She is a pretty humble gal! I am so proud of her!

FYI - they are already signing up for next year's Challenge. Hope to see you there!

I feel I sometimes write mostly for myself, to merely amuse myself, but I'm happy when someone else cracks a smile too.

Congrats on getting published...again...GL! Tell Kendra that telling her story is invaluable in ways she'll never know, so a young girl might read about Kendra and in response, take the road not taken.

I would like to be on a firefighting crew with Kendra, but not in front of her on the line. She would be telling me to move faster and take another swing with my tool. I'd rather be behind her on the line, probably would not be much to clean up after she came through.
Good job Kendra.

Wait a second
I called the Grand Portage State Park staff and they told me that the portage does not lead to the BWCA - are people actually able to do this portage?

Trix: "Way to Go Kendra! You Rock! You are Quite the inspiration to all Women! So, what's Next? What ever you have in mind, I am sure you will accomplish your goals!"
Trix, Getting through my daughters wedding in a week is next. I won't be as tough that day, I know I'll cry. I didn't on the trip.
As far as inspiring people, I hope I do! It was people from this very forum who inspired me, supported me and believed I could do it! Thanks Friends!
Also a thank you to Grandma L for letting me use her Spot. And thanks Team BeaV (BeaV, Deke, Meatpuppet, Whitewolf, and McPipes) for actually stopping to pick me up on the island at Birch narrows for round two. I don't know for sure, but there could have been a discussion prior to my pick up that went something like this, "I don't know guy's, she's a chatty one and she hasn't talked to anyone in more than a week?" Hahahaha! I was happy to be back with my team! Then JimmyJustice (another team member with a bum knee this year) showed up at Fort Charlette with some "toasting juice" and walked the Grand Portage with the team. A great way to end it all was greeting the other paddlers who also finished the Border Route Challenge!

After 2 weeks of adventuring, Kendra definitely felt right at home in the "sticks". By the time she reached the Grand Portage trailhead the second time around (this time with the rest of the team), this was becoming a problem.

Thanks for all the post trip Cheers!!! It was an adventure I won’t forget. I didn’t have much time to prepare for this trip. Things started to fall into place about two weeks before I headed to the start, so I went. This is how my schedule is most of the time.
I’m just a regular person like most of you, not a hero or a wonder woman, just a mom with a job and life responsibilities who had a ‘I wonder if I could do that’ moment and went for it!

All that may be true but not everyone who dreams big acts on those dreams nor accomplishes them. That puts you in a special category. Well done!

Yes, we can go over the top in admiring BeaV and Kendra. I only met them once, on a portage trail that went up and up and up. BeaV could see I was tired, so he dashed back to the beginning of the portage trail, climbed a mighty red pine there, and hauled the portage trail up behind him, so the portage trail now went down, down, down. I was so giddy with gratitude that I ran with my canoe to the portage trail's end, but picked up too much speed on the way and I tumbled at the water's edge, with my canoe landing in the water and drifting away. Luckily, Kendra was there and she walked on water to retrieve it. So, see, they're just two, friendly, fellow paddlers.
