Some people’s fingers should be leashed too. Haha! Glad there was a happy reunion!

Agreed. I have two dogs and would never let them off leash in a new environment."

If this is the dog I think it is, it is not a new environment. If I'm right, this dog is a local, owned by a year-round Clearwater Lodge employee.

While I don't disagree, things still happen. Even with the best trained dogs with responsible owners.

Yes, you are correct. And we are 99% sure he has been found by a hiker. Just waiting for confirmation. Thank you! (Amy - Retrievers Case Manager)

Amy, perhaps if you have a couple minutes you could make a post about your group, what you do and how you go about doing it. Is it a volunteer group? Is there a fee for your services? What services do you provide? That kind of stuff.

I'm sure it would be of interest to many here on BWCA.com. Thanks.

Yay, so glad Axl is home safe! We met him this Summer during our stay at the Lodge, my kids loved having a dog away from home. If I remember correctly he retired early as a sled dog.

Virtually every SAR dog handler I know has lost a dog at some point for some unwanted period of time. Including me.

MNIIHON: "Erik from Clearwater Lodge here. FWIW I don't appreciate the assumption that we are uneducated animal owners. Here's a bit of clarification. We have happily adopted and cared for numerous retired sled dogs(Alaskan Huskies) over the years. Axl is very familiar with the surroundings around Clearwater and the resort lifestyle we lead with him as a lodge dog allows him to interact with numerous guests and generally roam free without any problems. The kind of dog he is allows for him to live his best life as he loves exploring and meeting new people. It was a coincidental set of circumstances that led him down the Daniels Spur Trail with a couple of hikers who were headed to Rose Lake to spend three nights hiking and hunting. He is a friendly dog who loves going for walks in the woods and I am sure if you were to ask him would deny the fact that he was ever "lost". By the sounds and pictures of it from the hikers he was out there with he had an incredible time(bagged Rose Lake overlook) and we are grateful they were happy to accommodate an unplanned third member of their trip. Thanks to the Retrievers and everybody who helped us get the word out and make sure Axl made it home. Be careful with shaming lost dog owners, it's an incredibly stressful, depressing and vulnerable time to begin with. There is always more to the story. "
Well spoken Erik.

I love that story. Axl just went for a hike with some new friends. Reminds me of a dog a few years ago who jumped in a marathon run and finished the race.

Social media has taken all the truth out of any event. Erik, don’t take it personally, it could have been anyone. It’s the perils of of the times we live in. Technology sucks most of the time.
Tom"

I wouldn't so casually place the blame on the technology. It is still very real people behaving badly regardless of the technology. I have absolutely no problem recognizing that there are things I don't know and avoiding conclusion jumps and judgement despite the technology. I had no problem keying-in on the way this notice was posted--location as Clearwater Lodge rather than some lake inside the BWCA--and quickly taking a look at some social media photos of the lodge and some known employees to see if this dog was in any of them to see if he is a local dog (which he is).

People don't get a pass because technology makes it easier for them to be horrible. That same technology also allows them to be more informed and empathetic, and which way they use it is still their choice.

I wouldn't say that technology makes it easier to engage in bad behavior, more like it just makes it more visible. People have the same conversations, talking behind people's backs and gossiping offline too. Making these conversations more visible and thus easier to participate in is both a good and bad thing. It can lead to more people reinforcing negative or incorrect views, but it can also give others a chance to reject rumors or call people out on their bad behavior.

So you are saying your dog should have been on a leash?
I have a 13 year old lab that was the best duck hunting dog. Had him on hand signals. But now he is blind. I watch over him everytime he goes outside (he runs into trees). Just saying. He should have been leashed.
