I've read most of these books and they are all pretty good, but my favorite is It's A Wonderful Country by Bill Magie.

If your son enjoys the outdoor humor genre, and it seems he does, he would certainly enjoy any of the Patrick McManus books:
A Fine and Pleasant Misery (1978) They Shoot Canoes, Don't They? (1981) Never Sniff a Gift Fish (1983) The Grasshopper Trap (1985) Rubber Legs and White Tail-Hairs (1987) The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw (1989) Real Ponies Don't Go Oink! (1991) The Good Samaritan Strikes Again (1992) How I Got This Way (1994) Never Cry "Arp!" and Other Great Adventures (1996) Into the Twilight, Endlessly Grousing (1997) The Bear in the Attic (2002) Kerplunk!: Stories (2007) The Horse in My Garage and Other Stories (2012)

the Gary Paulson books are good, too, and written for that age range.

My 9 year old son (who’s been on at lest 5 canoe trips) ran out of reading material that he likes. I half-jokingly suggested he read some of my Bob Cary books. He picked out Jackpine Bob and several times a day I’ve had the pleasure of hearing him burst into hysterical laughter. Of course, I’ve ready it a few times, so when he tells me the tiny moments I’m practically on the floor laughing myself. He wants to read Lost in the Wild next, that’s gonna be heavy compared to Jackpine Bob. Any other books he should try?

+1 on the Patrick McManus recommendations. We've had one of his books as bed-time stories on most of our BWCA/Q trips, and How I Got This Way is currently on my bedside table. It's time to read "The Christmas Hatchet" again (Never Sniff a Gift Fish).

I would suggest he read Sigurd F. Olson. The Singing Wilderness, Listening Point, or many others that he wrote.
