I think simpler to reserve for fewer and add when you pick it up.

Sure is, except the person who reserved must go, or a listed alternate.

Right....if you only list one to start you better be damn sure that 1 makes it on the trip. I always list myself as the leader and at least one or two alternates (whoever they may be) so if something comes up and I can't go and they still want to they can go.

If someone listed on the permit cancels/does not make it is the group still able to use the same permit with their name on it or do they need a new permit? I usually only enter with one other person and have not had to worry about this in the past.

The short answer to your question is, "Yes, you can still use the same permit." Realize that the permit is not final until it is issued by the permitting station.

When you reserve your permit online there's a leader and alternate(s). If someone cancels out of those people, as long as one of those other people listed on it is there to pick it up (if there will be in-person pick up this year) you're ok, same with printing your own. If you don't list alternates and the leader cancels you're out. If one of the alternates is a no-show, who cares. (other than updating the number of people on the permit when you pick it up)
