Interesting. Me too, have always had some, seems like getting worse now, but there does seem to be a wilderness hum too. I'll be curious at others responses.

I don't notice my ringing as much in the wilderness. My ringing also changes thourgh out the day normally. One hour loud next hour just a quiet ringing.

I totally get that. Mine was just singing as I read these responses and then it just dropped as I typed. I think in part it's an overt awareness to it that at times can be quite loud but when you are not thinking of it, "quieter?"

I get it at various times and at various levels. You notice it more I think when it's quiet.

I wonder what percentage of us have it to some degree.

That's a real decent take that could be grounded in science I think. Thanks so far for the feedback. This is fun.

This is a very interesting topic, I felt like I was alone with the ringing. I don't know if it's different in the wilderness, but I suspect it is. Our house is quiet now as I type this, and I hear the ringing, but it was louder before I was typing (as mentioned earlier).

I have a solo coming up in September and I will try and remember to focus on this. Thanks for the interesting topic!

I just never noticed my Tinnitus while backpacking or paddling.
When I'm home my Tinnitus gets so loud sometimes I think others
can hear it too. {:>)

Hell yeah guys.

I didn't think this thread would get this much action but I love it! I find it totally fascinating that so far everyone says they don't hear it in the woods but get drowned with it home.

I second the stress theory.

And I’m usually just flat worn out after a day of travel, that has to help.

I too have tinnitus. Modest levels at worst when I hear it. Most of the time I do not hear it. I think my over the counter solution is why. I will not advertise here for this product, but if you want to know what I take for it, I will respond to your E-mail.

As a person who has had tinnitus for many, many years I think I have learned to “hear” through it. I pretty much have learned to ignore it. The curious thing has been as my hearing declined from moderate sensori-neural hearing loss to deafness in R ear with about 50% loss in L ear my tinnitus has remained the same. For the last nearly 4 yrs I have had a cochlear implant on the R and an aid on the L. I will probably need an implant in my L ear as I continue to lose hearing there.

After this thread I looked at the Mayo clinic site
. It is Stress related. tinnitus

Have had severe tinnitus for years. One of the saddest things for me is no longer "hearing the quiet" - the total quiet - I used to experience while on a BW lake. Mine is definitely worse in the quiet. Like most, I tune it out, but at times it comes into full view on the radar and drives me nuts.

Great topic and I was just thinking about this as I was on the permit sight yesterday in preparation for my first solo trip. I have had mild to moderate Tinnitus for awhile and it is one thing that I have been thinking about as I think through my solo trip. At home I always will play some music while I am doing anything. Last summer when I was with a group in the BWCA I didn't really notice it at all, but am wondering about the 5 days all alone and how it might creep up on me.

No worries, unless the sounds become sentences.

I'm in the same boat. I have raging tinnitus in my right ear. booze, loud noises, and coffee make it worse. I've had it for 33 years and I have learned to tune it out most of the time. I would love to make it go away some day. Funny thing is that it's in the ear I hear better out of.

I miss the sweet tune of the birds the most. While my hearing is still OK, I know their tune is not what it used to be, meaning, I can't hear them as well.

So don't listen to the voices?

I think with some people, like myself, it has to do with circulation. My stops when I move the lawn. Portaging and paddling help increase circulation. Also, the white noise of the forest can mask it as well, if the pitch of the ringing is the same.

I didn't realize I was so sensitive until I was in a car accident and on high doses. I thought it was related to my car accident, at first! : ) My doctor told me it was probably the NSAIDS. It definitely gets worse when I take them, and I definitely need to take them, unfortunately.

NSAIDS of course but also preservatives like sodium benzoate which is in most sodas, packaged food, jerky etc. can cause tinnitus.

The one drawback for me is when I go out away from the cities and such, out in the country, I hear nothing. Yes the ringing is there....but the noise of insects and some birds and noises like that are gone altogether in my range of hearing.

As a young man, I would sometimes venture out away from city life to watch a sunset and as a bonus I got to listen to all the bugs....not anymore.

Sometimes I miss that.

Mine sounds like crickets so I hear it inside and outside. That's how I realized I have it...not many crickets out in the winter. I don't mind, let's me know the thing is turned on, when that noise stops, I hope there is a reset button

I was born with 12 different sounds in my ears at all times. I didn't know that wasn't normal till I was older. It never changes and never quiet . But I'm OK with it.

The sound of my people,, EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEE. I have had it for years, pretty much 24/7. I need back ground noise to help me fall asleep.

That said, I get woken up up from my hammock sleep, on Duncan.. It sounded like we had critters in camp.. I crawled out of the rack, looked about and didn't see anything. Crawled back into my hammock, and heard the noises again. Rinse and repeat a few times- still nothing. That's when it hit me, the ringing in my ears was not there, what I was hearing was my GI tract.

LOL. Add another I guess to the ring fading in the woods. I honestly thought it would be a major problem with me but I don't seem to hear it at all. It's pretty prevalent when you are thinking about it though like as I respond to this post. Perhaps it's best NOT to think about it on a trip, it could ruin it for us.

I get it occasionally out of nowhere it seems. But I don’t recall ever hearing it on a wilderness trip. I think it’s stress related for me. And like One Match insinuated - When I think about it! I had it come and go while reading these comments. :)

I've had tinnitus at least 25 years. Today I've been working around the house, and in the course of the afternoon have used four saws and a palm sander, all with hearing protection. I didn't notice the "crickets" until I sat down to check BWCA.com and crossed this thread. Most of the time I don't notice it because it's been part of my life for so long, but it's especially disappointing when hiking or paddling my wife asks "did you hear that bird?"

I must have had it for awhile. I first became aware of it about 5 years ago while sitting in front of a campfire in Chippewa National Forest in the dead of winter. The nearest cabin was miles away and there was 10” of snow on the ground. Complete silence. Since then I’ve noticed it more and more. Generally I’m able to ignore it, and only hear it when I think about it. I haven’t noticed if it’s better in nature or not.

I've had mine for about 7-8 years and I am pretty good at ignoring it. I can hear it all the time although it bothers me most in loud restaurants and bars where there is numerous noises at once. It just seams to grind my brain when the annoying, I call it crickets or cicada sound, of the tinnitus is accompanied by other noises. I definitely still have it in the wilderness though I think it bothers me less when it's quiet and I'm in my preferred environment.

I have pretty bad tinnitus .. constant ringing in my ears. I hear it in quiet times of course. At bedtime it's the worst but I have come to embrace it as my personal white noise.

What's weird is I can't say I've heard the ringing in the wilderness. Maybe my mind is focusing on something else, natures music I would suppose. The question is, does your tinnitus seem worse or better in the silent forest?

I also hear crickets sometimes. But mostly I get the sounds of tree frogs singing on a warm spring evening. It can get quite loud and distracting to me. I know its just me because its the dead of winter here.

It tends to shut off, or recede into the background while I am out there. Maybe it's a shift in focus or mindset.
