View from the portage looking S,SE.
In BWCA.com map view, when using USGS Topographic view this area is blue, indicating water, but when viewed with Satellite view you are able to see the bog which is shown in the picture.

djwillco: "Crap! I was going to guess Gotter but one of the pictures looked like it might be too much water. Just went through there last Spring! Bad conditions on that route. Way back in the day, the first time I went through Gotter I wasn't paying close attention and accidentally tried to take the old portage into Crag that no longer exists! After a few minutes we came to our senses... :-)"
Yes! Coming from the East was quite the doozy. We got turned around and had to backtrack over the bog brush. 15 minutes of huffing, getting in and out of the canoe to push, hoping we wouldn't fall through the bog into the dark abyss. Upon reaching the portage you realize there is a route out that people coming from the west can see. I bet it's different every year.

Is Gotter the one with that bizarro wooden staircase that just drops down into the lake on the portage?

The last time I was on that lake, that sea of green was a floating sea of brown and beige reeds. Interesting to see the change in that photo above.

I remember passing through Gotter and thinking, huh, guess the BW has ugly lakes too.

" I think it’s a beautiful lake and full of character! I identified it because of that rock formation that I found so sticking. I also went across it several times last winter and love crossing it every time. There are so many lakes up there with identical, featureless landscapes - Gotter has charm.

And the view from up on that rock is pretty nice as well. You can see over into Flying from there.
