Thanks. It seems to have been favorably received so far with good participation.


In MOST cases, there isn't a right or wrong answer. Since we are asking "what would YOU do?" There are varying viewpoints and thought processes that lay the foundation for the final decision made by each individual. Which gives everyone an opportunity to see things differently.

I would like to start a thread series called “What would you do?” I know a lot of “what would you do” scenarios have been covered here over the years, either indirectly through experiences, or inquiries on the multitude of canoe country topics and situations. But this is more deliberate. Geared towards conflicts that require us to think through the scenario(s), with the understanding that each decision will have a major impact either for the upcoming trip, or future trips that keep us planning and motivated.

Here are the rules:

1) The scenario has to conflict with, or affect your BWCAW/Q trip(s).

2) Explain a real life scenario that you have encountered, or possibly could encounter that would conflict with or affect your next trip, or future trips.

3) The conflicting scenario can originate from within the BWCAW/Q, or outside the BWCAW/Q.

4) Do not provide your personal decision in your original post. Let the members think through and post their thought process and responses. Only after you feel the feedback has been exhausted should you share your stance or final decision on the scenario. Who knows, you may think differently after reading different viewpoints and various perspectives.

5) Keep it positive! The goal is to provide real life scenarios for our minds to problem solve, and solutions that may help someone one day. Chances are, if someone is going through it, most likely others are too.

I will post the first “What would you do?” #1 scenario soon. The format will make more sense and you will get the idea. Those that follow will be “What would you do?” #2, “What would you do?” #3 and so on.

We have experienced the unexplainable, engine trouble, notorious wind and waves, merciless bears, clogged portages, campsite logistics, rapid running, severe weather, and the unforgettable senior citizen orgy on an occupied campsite. Crazy stuff!


There are a couple pending scenarios out there with the outcome yet to be shared or determined. Wait for it! Thanks for sharing your BWCA experiences!
