The OP said he is looking for an extended forecast to help him pack. I don't think weather radios are the solution here.

Who has the most accurate weather forecast for the interior of the BWCA? Ely or Grand Maris? The extended forecast helps me decide how to pack.

Ely is my experience since it avoids the lake effect of Superior

I’d say probably not Grand Marais. I think the weather station might be up at the airport near Deviltrack Lake, but I think it is still affected by the lake too much. I usually just look at Ely. I think there is a weather station toward the upper Gunflint which would be accurate at least for current weather, but I can’t remember the name. Will post if I find it. I have repeatedly seen 20° swings from GM to the upper trail.

Most weather reports on the NOAA weather system include an "Around the Area" current conditions report that will give you, at the least, temp and sky conditions for about a 50 mile radius.

If you chose a town like Isabella, MN you can scroll down to the map at the bottom and use your cursor to select a lake you want to camp on. Once you do that the forecast will recalibrate for the newly selected location.

This year I’m taking my Garmin InReach unit. You can request a weather forecast with it. I’ve used it at home for weather and it’s right on to the hour. It gives you a forecast for 2 1/2 days. First day is every two hours, then every six hours after that. I think it will be a game changer for me.

I think the OP meant using a weather radio and which frequency to use- W side (Ely) E side (Grand Marias)? Interior center of the park I'd go with Ely because of the general nature of the weather to have W to E movement- especially with severe thunderstorms.

Do you happen to know which channel that is?

I have found that when you are inside the BW the channel you listen to is the one you can raise. That all depends on: terrain, mineral composition of the rock you are standing on, wind direction and other meteorological factors, antenna direction, and luck.

A pocket radio can pick up a radio station in Ely to get a current forecast, call letters are WELY. End of the road radio. Great station to listen to.

I find national weather service pretty good. But like white wolf and his weather modules I’d look at two or three sources as often times they’ll differ and you’ll have a good idea the potentials of what your packing for.
