Jackfish, I'm honored you put me in a class of pros as those from Madtown....

Now, being from Ohio where most area colleges can't compete athletically with "Thee" Ohio State U, my guess is they'd be more than happy to drink OSU and any other Big 10 school under the table....although Univ of Wis could be tough to beat....and remember that it happened..... :-)

Pineknot has clearly established himself as the lake-naming guru of BWCA.com. His knowledge of lakes in canoe country, clearly earned from an extensive number of canoe trips over the years, is quite impressive. Dare I say that he's set the bar that few of us can hope to touch.

Along those lines, I'm reminded of a story in a particular magazine many, many years ago (I'm thinking late '60s) that wanted to rank the Top Ten party schools in the Big Ten Conference (back when the Big Ten was still only ten schools).

The article only listed nine schools... but there was an *asterisk.

I don't recall how all the schools were ranked, so I'll just list them in alphabetical order:

Illinois
Indiana
Iowa
Michigan
Michigan State
Minnesota
Northwestern
Ohio State
Purdue

Missing from the ranking was Wisconsin. Down at the bottom, there was the explanation of the *asterisk. It went something like this:

*Note: We refuse to include the University of Wisconsin in this ranking because we feel it unfair to include professionals on a list made up of amateurs.

Pineknot, no one is excluding you from any future lake-naming contests. Keep playing. I'm just razzing you a little regarding your status as our "professional lake-guessing guru". :)

What I have been wondering: where is CowDoc? Did someone tell him he can't play anymore?

University Of Wisconsin? That's cute. Says a 1970s alum of SIU Carbondale

PineKnot: " "Thee" Ohio State U"
I'm trying to think of something vomitous, yet courteous... can't come up with it. LOL

I'm sure everyone who cheers on "Thee" University of Wisconsin, "Thee" University of Minnesota, "Thee" University of Iowa, "Thee" University of Illinois (and many others) are glad their university didn't try to trademark the word "The". :)

However, for the next 48 hours, you're allowed to refer to yourself as "Thee" Professional Lake-guessing Guru of BWCA.com. :)

UW Madison was and may still be a major party school. I remember UW Madison in the mid 1960’s and early 1970’s. BA 1972, MS 1978.

Mocha used to be pretty good at the game too. Me, I have missed ones that were taken from a campsite I stayed at just a few months prior!

Nope. Please don't....refer to me most anyway you wish, but please refrain from using "Thee'....I grew up in MN loving any school that competed well against OSU....

And to be honest, if it were a standard, we don't really need to crap on a school we don't like due to sports....but OSU.....well, they really make it hard to adhere to that standard....

I think I read that article as well. Cannot remember which mag it is. Did they branch out to politics and include an interview with President Carter at one point? If so, I do know the magazine in question.

Believe it was when Carter was running for the first time in '76. But yes!

As do I, but I clearly shouldn't have had access to that magazine at that tender age.

Funny, but true. A few years ago the UW System board of regents discussed upping the tuition/fees cost to students who continued attending the systems schools without graduating while accumulating far more credits than needed for graduation. I remember hearing that the typical full time UW student took 4.5 to 5 yrs to graduate.
