When I was in grade school in the 60s, that was the consensus then, too. We could see 200 million on the horizon in the US and wondered what the hell we were going to do with that many people.
I can see the population getting "levelled" some time in the future.

As to the population issue...famine, disease, and war are highly correlated with population density in all living creatures.
