Where did you get the clips? I love it, may have to steal this idea!

Though I haven't in the past, I will start bringing a spare paddle on trips. Two reasons: 1. I have a new Bending Branches Black Pearl paddle. I know they are tough, but it still feels delicate to me, and I will feel better having a spare. 2. I used my previous paddle for 35 years. It's been refinished several times, and I like it. It also has some sentimental value to me, and I still might want to use it now and again.

So..... in order to have a spare, I rigged up this clip system so the paddle can be snapped in, solid, and not get in the way too much. I will add a BDB to the grip so it stays solid against the top thwart. I will test it next week.

At my local Ace hardware just down the street. Funny, but Home Depot did not have this size of clip.

Same idea here, but with Bungee Dealee Bobs. It provides a non-permanent solution as I am renting the canoe. Technique works for both the spare paddle and our fishing rods.

Lookin’ good. I used to be anti-2nd paddle. I now am not opposed to one. I paddle solo and if I ever wreck my paddle, it’s gonna suck have to fabricate something.

Will one clip hold it firmly enough on a portage? In your opinion? I have an Ace a quarter mile from me.

I first tried the BDB method, but it didn't work optimally for me.

My fishing rod(s) is in its soft-sided roll and BDBed onto the bottom of the thwart in front of me.

This gives me some ideas for mounting with some paddle clips I have. I can see that it helps to hold the paddle shaft a bit below the thwarts.

I think you will like having the wood paddle along. I like switching between my carbon fiber bent and my wood straight. The straight is better for twisty streams and sometimes I just like the different feel of the blade size and the feel of wood.

Great idea! I might just be stealing it!

I have used those clips in the past. Now I use clips from Southern Tier Canoe Racing. They are rubber coated and can be screwed or taped to a thwart. They also sell the same clip with a nylon clip attached perpendicularly to it. I have unscrewed the nylon clip and reattached it to items such as my compass and my thin map board which holds strips of maps for the entire border route. The maps are plastic coated and have 2 rings at the top and a lightweight clip on the bottom to keep them in place. Savage River I think sells clips as well as heavy duty nylon perpendicular loops with heavy duty velcro. Very secure, just not as quick as clips. I think all the above sell for $5 ea., probably not as cheap as Ace's clips.

I'm hoping so. I haven't tried it yet on a portage. It's a very tight grip, however, and I am not anticipating it getting loose. I think the profile is low enough that I will not hit it with a pack coming into or out of the canoe.

Is the clip screwed on to the bottom of the portage yoke? It also looks like a great way to make a quick grab for the paddle when you need it right away. Pretty cool.

After buying a Bending Branches Arrow at Canoecopia a few years ago, the tip separated on my first day in Woodland Caribou. First time I was really glad I had a spare.

I use the Piragis velcro straps but with them, the paddle has to go on the top of the thwart. I like how this keeps it out of the way.

Do you mean these clips?

Yes Scott, that's 1 of them. Cheaper than I remembered, maybe $5 at Savage River installed. The other 1 at Southern Tier is called a" paddle clip snap on". It sells for $6 and is product number 23 of 32.

I should point out, I use these in conjunction with the slotted foam paddle blade blocks, contact cemented to the sides of the canoe. It makes for a fairly smooth transition from my single blade to double blade. Half of each Werner Kalliste goes on each side of the front of the boat. If I'm single blading it the ZRE gets stowed between front thwart and seat frame.

I have always had a spare paddle.

In 6 decades of canoeing the idea of going with out a spare is foreign.

I have dropped them have broken them had the slip off the canoe.

And many more reasons to have a spare.

I find it hard to believe any body would trip with out a spare.

The talk about being up a creek with out a paddle can be very true.

I use these as they're rubber so I'm not concerned about damage to paddle and they're quiet. Quick fist set of 2...just get the right size
