I hate how these turn into PFD discussions instead of just focusing on the family. Sounds like something else was the initial cause and I feel bad for the family.

If I had a family member die, even if it was a heart attack or something that made the life jacket not the main culprit, I'd rather have a bunch of internet strangers advocate PFDs then focus on my family. Random group chat / forum on the internet isn't going to do anything for the family, or I should say very, very little, while a reminder that PFDs should be worn may actually help the next person.

Idk I get your point. However, I would rather my memory or a family member memory not be made about something I may or may not have believed it. Sadly there are a lot every year though.

We all feel bad for the family.

There’s feeling bad and then there’s always wearing a PFD. One of those two has the potential to save a future life.

These types of posts always remind me of reading the ACA Rock Climbing Accident reports. Always learn from others unfortunate circumstances. I switched to always wearing a PFD no matter what, especially now I have two young boys. Easy life insurance policy to mitigate some objective hazards.

I doubt that anyone who has ever lost someone in this manner would be that upset at people encouraging others to wear their PFD so that others don't have to go through the same thing.

And so what if there was something else that preceded the drowning? Whatever it was, he ended-up in the water without a PFD and drowned. "Something else" can happen to any of us to send us into the water as well.

To me its not that they would be upset. It's the idea of using their death as an agenda if you will. Obviously I'm in the minority on this but it just bothers me is all :/

Dealing with death within a family is always tough.

But throughout history sometimes we learn from the consequences and mishaps of others. I think that is what many here are trying to do. Stop it from happening again if possible.

Another drowning in the BWCAW where the victim was not wearing a PFD. Please...wear one, and INSIST that kids do too.

Sad deal. Good reminder to always advocate wearing a pfd to everyone in your group. Especially those who are new to the bwca.

Horrible to hear this.

On a side note -- The headline next to this photo of smiling people is pretty gross. Great example of why we should leave journalism to humans.

I think the man was in a boat and not a canoe. While I wear my pfd in my canoe, I honesty would probably not wear it if I was in a boat.

He fell overboard in a boat with friends pulling him back in, apparently too late.

Is that about ten for the year?

Oh, no. That's horrific timing.

Nobody gets in my boat without a PFD on. I'd rather deal with a grumpy person in a PFD than with a grieving family. The auto-inflatables are ideal for that application, don't even realize you're wearing them.
