Yep, experienced this myself. One kept us up most of the night on Red Rock. I think it was PO'd we pitched a tent close to it's burrow. Big sucker too, must have been 18 inches tall sitting on it's haunches."
yes, and they have been known to sound like 400 lb big birds running around. it is crazy how loud they can be at night when they run around.

Yes, lots of grouse drumming this past weekend along the Granite River. I heard something new, which sounded like rocks being clapped together on my island. Solo trip so I was scanning the woodline with my flashlight, after I heard it a second or third time.
Once around 15 years back, we were conversing with a couple kayakers in the BWCA around this time of year and they were convinced that the thumping they were hearing behind their camp was moose running around. He demonstrated the increasing speed of the thumping often heard from grouse. We said, "You know, grouse get pretty loud when they're drumming..." He said, "No way man, this thing was BIG."
Also, rabbits definetly do thump the ground as an alert to others when they're hearing/seeing threats.

Yep. Grouse. Often you can get close enough to watch them do it.
