There is a lot of room in the UP. The National Forests are vast. Where are you headed?

Wifey and i spent 10 days in the UP last fall. We did four days on the Keweenaw Peninsula last month and are going for another 10 day trip to the UP again this fall.

We were in the UP when our positive covid tests came back. Weren't sick when we left Minneapolis, but the hospital in Musining confirmed the diagnosis six days later after I took a sharp south turn.

Has anyone stayed in Sylvania Wilderness near Watersmeet, alog WI border? Looks like a mini-BWCA.

Right now four of the six most recent topics are on bad things/complaints.

Not a good vibe. Just seems like it should be pointed out.

The biggest difference is that you have to reserve specific campsites. Good smallie fishing. Catch and release and barbless hooks. Very nice area.

Nice area but somewhat over-used. And you are right it is considered BWCA-lite. If you can, try to go during the week since it is often booked-up throughout the summer on weekends. I have been going there since the mid 1970's. Now I go only during spring or fall. During the first week of November last year I went for 3 nights during a nice weather window - low 50's daytime and 30's nights. And I encountered no one. On summer trips made sure to check the great beach on the south end of Clark Lake.

Good news for yooper business. And keeping the search and rescue crews in practice. Super-charged UP travel

Pretty Lakes Quiet Area around Pine Stump Junction and Big Island Lake Wilderness are more off the radar paddling spots.

COVID supercharged Upper Peninsula travel. Looks like it’s going to last.

Time will tell if it lasts. I do hope some stay but if everyone stays at it we need more areas :)

Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness has some rustic camp sites worth checking. Trap Hills just north of Lake Gogebic is a nice hike with a great overlook... and better trail than Porcupine Mountain trails.

We’ve opted to do tens day in the U.P. We will primarily be exploring, hiking and camping in Tahquamenon Falls State Park, the Pictured Rocks Area and then onto the Porcupine Mountains.

See above post. For hiking, Trap Hills segment of the North Country Trail is worth a day trip. Better than a day at Porkies, IMO.

I’ll look into that. Thanks for the tip!
