I just bought a Old Town 15ft 4 inch kevlar solo canoe that I think is a northern light model. It probably was bought in about 1992. I got it from the widow of the original owner who was cleaning out her garage. It weighs about 44 to 46 lbs. Does anyone know anything about this model.

I solved the mystery by talking to the folks at Old Town. It is a Northern Light Kevlar build from 1991. One of a few kevlars made my Old Town. I'm going to give it a fresh gel coat before I put it in the water. Thanks for the responses, Hiawatha

Looks just like an Old Town Northern Light canoe. Yes kevlar was used for a short time. There are more pics courtesy google and e bay.
You can email the HIN to Old Town and they may give you a build record.

It would appear it's the solo canoe pictured below.

It did come in Kevlar. Not sure if it also was built with just glass. My friend has a 17 foot Canadienne.. a very nice extended lakewater boat.

Don’t know anything about it but it looks like a beauty. I have to ask, did you get for free. That’s a deal! Have fun with it.

Perhaps a CJ Solo (Cliff Jacobsen is CJ).

i have never heard of old town making any kevlar canoe. i had won a book from them and just can't remember kevlar ever. but it looks like a penobscot , that someone tried to use a royalex mold , in kevlar and dropped in a solo seat, instead of a tandem.

Don't know if I've ever seen one like that. Looks in pretty good shape though.

That was my exact thought when I saw it, wouldn't have believed it was an Old Town except for the badge in the stern.

Yes, it came in kevlar and in glass. I had a glass Canadienne that I bought in 1983 that I got as a hull only with no trim of any kind. I fitted it out with wood trim (ash, walnut and mahogany) and it weighed a ton. I sold it a few years ago when I could on longer handle it but it was a sweet paddling canoe. Here are a few pictures of it.
I learned recently from Ted Bell that Bell Canoe Works made a few Canadiennes for Ralph Freese after Oldtown stopped making them.

I don’t think it’s an OT CJ Solo. I just sold one that I had for the last 35 years. My understanding was they were only made for a few years in fiberglass and were discontinued due to low sales.
