I got MPR and WELY on my zune on Boot Lake (the one near Fourtown) and on That Man in Quetico. I'm not sure if another device like an MP3 player would work. It is very light and compact. I enjoy the classifieds and personal messages on WELY that I've heard in the past. They can be pretty entertaining. Both stations will cut in with the weather periodically. It helped the time there was 9 inches of rain in 1 day and it didn't seem like it would ever end.

Speaking of weather band. I was surprised I couldn’t find a local be broadcast online. Only Select areas in MN are online…and nowhere in the NE. I was just surprised there wasn’t a NE MN feed.

The best weather band radio I have is a little cheapie am and fm and weather band. Palm size. I’ve tried others and more expensive and they just don’t work as well.

Whatever service they use today is terrible. It's very generalized and the same recording is used all day long. I'd much rather go with a weather radio over WELY.

Blatz: "Use both with a Sangean DT 400. "

I second this radio. Got one 2 years ago and it's great. The included rat tail antenna helps bring in the WX band. Tip-if you're having trouble, put the end of the antenna in your mouth, it improves reception. Depending on how close you are to the border, or if in Quetico, you can pick up the Canadian Wx stations as well. MPR out of Ely can also have some good weather (89.3) or Grand Marias (89.7) if you're on the east side.

You can also easily pick up WCCO after dark and see how bad the Twins lost. No mouth tuning needed ;)

Funny if I'm holding mine the reception is better. Never tried the mouth. I also found out that having the Rat tail antenna contact my carbon paddle it improves reception

I’ve read you can splice extra wire onto the rat tail and really improve reception, but I haven’t tried that yet! Maybe get about 40 feet and send the end up the tree with the bear bag!

I remember my grandpa saying once that when he was a teenager he used to drive out to lake at night with his friends, put one end of a chain around the antenna then throw the other end in the lake. He said from Nebraska he was able to tune in stations (AM) from halfway around the world. I had completely forgotten that story until now so I've never tried it. Maybe put your wire in the lake before going to the trouble of hoisting it up a tree and see if it works. I'll give it a whirl next time I'm near a lake.

Yes, I've heard the same. I think it works even better if it's salt water.

WELY 94.5 gives pretty regular updates.

I have an Eton radio that has a weather band. It would be a great addition to your xmas list :)

I’m wondering if anyone knows if any of the stations out of Ely have weather reports on a regularly scheduled time each hour (or something similar). I don’t have a weather radio yet and was hoping to keep the “noise” to a minimum. Thanks for your time.

Yes, they have regular reports. Up until a few years ago, they introduced the weather with: "Here is your Ely, Boundary Waters and surrounding area weather-eye forecast." That was our cue to quiet down and listen for what was upcoming. Now they have another service, but weather reports nonetheless.

Use both with a Sangean DT 400.
