Our badass friend Tony aka GopherAdventure just shattered the record for the portage division full marathon-eclipsing the prior record (also his) by like 35 minutes! I've known Tony since we ran cross country in high school together. He's a helluva runner and a better dude. Congrats brother! #inspired

Thanks Rich and everyone else! It was a fun weekend and Ely was rocking all weekend long. Great to see so many people coming out for the event. It seems like the event is growing each year and it’s fun to be a part of it. My shoulders are a little tender and the legs are still as stiff and sore as can be, but I accomplished my goal thanks to my supportive family who were there to cheer as I hobbled through the last mile. I’ll share a pic or two when I get more, but the only one I have for now is from the awards ceremony where a Minnesota Marathoning legend, Dick Beardsley, was handing out the awards. Here’s Dock and I at the awards…

Congrats Tony! When you flew past me on the Grand Portage last year, I made the remark, " I couldn't have kept up with you even when I was younger". It appears no one else can either.

No “models” or toys. From the website: CANOES A canoe used for the Ely Marathon or Boundary Waters Bank Half Marathon must be a traditional canoe designed to be paddled by one or two people, commonly used for extended time in the BWCA. Kayaks, models, plastic, inflatable and cardboard are not allowed.
Yeah, a wee lassie would be fine. Both years I’ve done it I carried my Northstar ADK canoe that is 12’ and weighs around 25 pounds. I almost carried my NW solo this year because it’s more comfortable, but there was some wind in the forecast so I opted for the shorter canoe last minute. I’m glad I did, as the winds picked up as the race went on.
