Very true. I've camped at that site, and have done the portage into Shell from Lawer Pauness many, many times. One year I literally swam a short distance across the mid-portage pond.

The photos are from the north campsite on Con Island. These photos were from a trip in 2016 when I lead my son's Scout Troop there. They had a blast. First time paddlers needed 4 hours to make the 2 hour trip. :) Was very surprised the site was available. They really enjoyed the hike to Devil's Cascade. You can pick up the hiking trail with a short paddle to the north shore of the lake directly across from this campsite.

Looking generally NNE from the same campsite and about 20 yards east of the first photo. This lake is both a destination and a through lake. It is reachable (depending on how you count, water levels and which route you take) in 4-5 portages of mixed difficulty. It is perfect for first timers or base campers who want to explore other options. If there is no correct guess, the next picture clue should be a giveaway and have you all slapping your heads in frustration.

MM, all our swimming was done in the bay by the campsite...what a treat.
I don't count the few rods from the parking lot to LIS North as a portage, but the scouts did! Water levels in June 2016 were just a few inches too low to take the shortcut between Lower and Upper Pauness. Thankfully the Beaver Pond was good and muddy and the granite outcroppings on the 220 rod portage were wet and slippery so the kids got the full effect.

This lake is in the BWCA. My son (circa 2016) is looking roughly NNW and wondering where the next lunker is hiding or more likely...what is over yonder that dad says we will see tomorrow.
