Does anyone have an idea where this photo may have been taken? It's a pic of my cousin and a family friend. I wish I could ask but neither one is with us any longer.
I'm guessing the picture was taken sometime in the 60's. We live in NE Minnesota so I'm assuming it was taken somewhere in or near the current BWCA.

Actually the first word just tells you that a portage begins there. The middle line generally tells you what is at the other end, typically the name of a lake or a river (i.e. Lizz Lake), but in this case perhaps an un-named "pond". The bottom lines tells you the distance. It will be interesting to see if someone recalls this spot from so long ago.

Don't know if it means anything but when I did a google search for Portage Pond nothing came up but I did get a suggested similar search for Ojibway and Triangle lakes area. There were a couple lakes called Glacier pond 1 and 2 so maybe some name changes in the last 50 years.

Northwoodsman is correct. It is not "Portage Pond."
The picture was taken at the end of a 60 rod portage to an unnamed pond.

Here's another pic that uses that same structure for the info:

It's a PORTAGE
At the other end is the ELY-BUYCK ROAD (Echo Trail)
You'll be walking 513 RODS

I actually something like that fish pole construction setup on Ensign lake a few years ago.

Contact the USFs, maybe they can help. The kawishiwi office would be closest

Well at least I now know to quit looking for Portage Pond.
My guess is somewhere in the Ely area. We are only 1 1/2hr away. There were a lot of really good fishing opportunities back then so no need to go too far.

Ojibway lake was called Twin lakes up until the 50s. I have always known the 3 pond lakes as Glacier 1&2 and Refuge Pond.

Obviously early spring and maybe before opener?"

And photo taken by a Game Warden. That would take a smile off your face for sure. I remember back in the day eating Pickled Pike. Didn't care for it then and I know I wouldn't care for it now either."

Game Warden taken photo?...I'm sorry I even put this photo on this site. Just thought I could get some insight on the location.
I fished and hunted a lot with both of these guys and never saw either of them break the law...ever.
Wow. That is disappointing.

Marley, we were just kidding with you. If I had even one fish as large as the smallest one that they have I would have a smile from ear to ear that you couldn't knock off with a baseball bat. What would they do with a stringer of pike this big back then? They would have to clean them and haul them out so bear, turtles, and other animals wouldn't get them wouldn't they? I suppose that they could have carried in coolers and ice. Not knowing where the photo was taken we have no idea how far they traveled. I'm sure that they were law abiding sportsmen.

Way back in the 1980's into the early 1990's I belonged to a group which took spring/fall trips to the UP and their motto was "catch, fillet and release."

The very first time I saw the photo I noticed one of those guys looks like he is not happy being in the photo. I found that odd. That’s all.

Not a big deal. I guess the big Facebook smiles didn't exist back then.
Your comment made me look back at some of my early '70s pics. There weren't many smiles...I guess we were going for the "been there, done that" look.

Based on Marley's thinking of the date, back in the those days when there was much logging in the area it would make sense that there were unnamed ponds in the area that may have had trails leading to them. I'm not sure what they were used for... perhaps fishing, trapping, etc. The ponds likely exist today but serve no purpose thus those trails are no longer marked on maps. Looking at the frame that the fish are hanging on, it doesn't look like it was just thrown together. Perhaps it was a canoe rest back in the day.

Section Pond is between South Lake and Slim Lake. The portage from South Lake to Section Pond is about 70 rods. And there is a campsite close to the portage. I would assume this photo was taken at or near where these guys were camped.

I'm sure this isn't it, but it's the only Portage Pond that came up for me.
