Is this you or a video you found on YouTube?
Either way…In a way I get the sense of adventure going down the rapids but it looked like the guy in the back wasn’t wearing a life jacket maybe he had an inflatable? I hope? At least reduce the risk.
My first trip…a group tipped at the Lake 4 to Hudson portage that they tried to run…as people fished them out and I still remember a grizzled gray veteran paddler saying “those portages are there for a reason”. Sort of stuck with me.

Okay then I will be a little meaner :)…they also didn’t appear to have the paddle skills to be doing rapids…at least from the video they showed. They shot from one bank to another, you have to be able to steer/turn together…nothing in the video made it look like they had even close to the skill level to try this. It looks like they tipped at the end but it was very shallow…plus they posted on YouTube so assume they are okay :)

Looked like they were having a blast to me. I would do that in a heartbeat. I think they handled the boat pretty well, had to dodge some bushy overhangs. Kind of a stretch to say they tipped at the end considering there was water in the bottom of the boat.

Not the best paddling skills there. But made up for it with the cooking and fishing skills.

Looked like a fun channel to shoot. I probably would have done it as well in my solo. Their paddle skills appeared pretty basic but just adequate for the conditions. Biggest issue I saw was no PFD on the canoer in back.

You might be right…my assumptions was they tipped because the majority of the video in the rapids was shot from a camera on a permanent boom mounted on the back of the canoe. When they had the underwater shot I assumed they had flipped and it was the boom camera, but I think the front paddler just took his chest/body mounted camera and put it in the water. Now I don’t just question their paddling skill, I question their video editing :) …that shot makes no sense? Who cares about an underwater shot at the end. That’s footage you edit out not add in? Maybe they lost the boom camera when it hit the tree near the bank? Anyway a better shot would be them cheering, pumping their paddles over their head triumphantly making it :)
It’s video one with another to be added later…maybe they are just trying to be funny…and left the footage in so some people thought they tipped?

That wasn't even a rapids, it was swift water over a submerged rock pile. I didn't see them hit a rock or get hung up, and how do you know the water was cold. It may have been shot on a 90 degree day. Geez the self righteous fun police, what a yawn, oh boy would I like to party with you. Blow out my birthday candles so I don't burn myself, please.

Based on the Outfitter logos on the canoes, and the shuttle, these guys appear to be in rented kevlar canoes. I am sure the outfitter was thrilled with this video.
And what part of stupid does the guy in back not understand about not wearing a PFD in rapids and cold water?

posted May 24, yesterday. My point is that they are risking canoes they don't own, not wearing PFD's and running moving water with strainers.

Haha it's from this year! And the water hasn't warmed up yet....nice try though

Sure looked like fun to me. I can see some of you guys on a trip. Nobody dips their toe in the water without a PFD on! Nobody walks barefoot in my camp! Nobody trips with me without a spot device a whistle and a flare gun on their person at all times! And don't even think about skinny dipping without supervision by two licensed life guards on shore with throw ropes and a dragon floatie! If that is a rapids it is no better than a class 1, I saw nothing dangerous about it. But then again, I like to see people have fun on a trip. Not have to follow their fearful leader every second.

It is a rapids, by any reasonable definition. The video is title 2022 and there are no leaves out yet. The water has been and is extremely cold. The rapids-running portion of video is obviously on a cool if not cold day. The water would be the same mid-May cold even if it this happened to be a freak hot day. In my opinion, the original post title is exactly right: A great example of what not to do. There's nothing self righteous about any opinion here, including yours or mine. The fact that I disagree with you doesn't make you self-righteous. Vice versa.

Wow! People with no skills and no understanding of whitewater in early spring shooting a river in the flood stage, pushing off the tress in 10mph current and putting it on YouTube - it's a real treat. How long it would take them to get out of the water if they capsized? Was there a proper shore to bail out and walk to safety before hypothermia will settle in? They were risking more than a canoe. Not a real rapid? Statistically most river drownings take place in class 2 or less whitewater.

I agree on the use of kevlar canoes. I've run rapids in my Old Town Penobscot, but that is royalex. I don't think I would risk a kevlar on moving water like that. All it takes is one collision with a rock.
