I am confused how people know they didn't procure another permit.

I get the permit thing and the over packing, but there's a lot they did right if you watch the entire video.

I can overlook going out and then returning to there vehicle if they went in later that day when the wind died down. But not waiting until the next day there permit is for a specific day not go in when they want to. That permit was invalid for 2 reasons they entered and then left and also they entered on the wrong day!

…I am just saying in the whole scheme of things it didn’t change anything. Sag is a huge lake with lots of camps, I don’t think they denied anyone a camp. We don’t know, maybe the wind was howling all night? Also in that situation some people defy LNT and just bushwhack a camp. I think that is 10x worse than leaving and re-entry.

No bueno! You need to enter on the day your permit says. They clearly don’t understand the permit system and that is a failure on their part and whoever issued the permit. No excuse.

I agree 100%. What should they have done differently? Risk it and continue their way in those conditions? Pack up and go home? Haha jeepers. They slept in their car and left at first light, no damage done.

Your post seems weird considering the consensus so far…

To defend the other side…they did break the rules and they did post it on the internet that they travelled on an invalid permit. There is a level of ignorance that is okay to call out. I’ll still argue it doesn’t upset me in this situation, but totally get the other side too.

I’ll add if they get a fine from the FS…I won’t feel sorry for them either. I am just not that upset about their decision. Watching the whole video…they seemed to try to follow the rules. I just can’t get too upset about it.

I’ve read too many posts from veterans on this very site getting permits for an entry only to use a different more convenient entry with the wrong permit, booking “in case” permits in January, camping on the Q side due to poor planning, crossing the border illeagally, entering other peoples sites to share or waking them up in the early AM or bushwhacking a site because they couldn’t find a site…all of those are way worse offenses in my opinion.

Yeah, there's the whole entry/permit issue...but I'm more curious about the watermelon. Looked good - heavy to carry. Was it worth it? Also, I'm assuming they packed out the rinds, but holy crap isn't that a little risky attracting certain wildlife with these rinds hanging around camp?

It is unlikely that they purchased two permits ahead of time. It is also unlikely that there was one available to purchase that next day.

I didn’t watch much of it. Hard to watch. We all start needing to learn a lot. I’m taking two noobs out in a few weeks and keeping them from bringing a bunch of loose items is going to be a challenge. Any extra stuff they want loose they will be carrying over the portages though.

I’m sure they didn’t get an extra permit but they did it to be safe so I don’t have a huge issue with it. Was it wrong yes it was but safety first.

I was dealing with waves and trying to find an open campsite on Agnes last Friday. Landed twice on different islands thinking they were campsites but they weren’t. Couldn’t really check the gps or map real well fighting the waves and trying not to capsize. My family wanted to just camp in either of those non designated campsites but I said we couldn’t. Managed to glass a 3* site which was vacant and we stayed in a designated campsite after a short paddle through waves over to it. Horrible landing and waves coming in so that was a fun challenge. Pretty much told my wife that is why we need to do a Quetico trip next year and not BWCA based on the experience of 8 campsites in a row being filled on Agnes!

If that 3* had been filled we would have camped on that island in between two other campsites for safety! I’d have felt uncomfortable with it but I would have done it. Leaving as small a LNT footprint on the island as possible though.

What are your thoughts on the beginning of their trip?

Way too much loose stuff - they better familiarize themselves with the Lost /Found thread.

LOL. It's funny you posted this. I watched it over the weekend.

Watching these guys was like watching my first trip into the BW; excited and ignorant. They have too much loose gear all over the place and they suck at packing their canoes, but I'll be damned if I am going to give them crap for that. We all start somewhere.

As for the permit thing... I think they are fine and I am not mad in the slightest. I would rather a group of greenhorns turn around because they are uncomfortable with their paddle skills on a choppy lake and return the next day, than dump and require a rescue. And I bet the FS would agree.

I forgot about the watermelon :)

I have to admit...it sure looked good and they seemed to enjoy it. Wouldn't be worth it for me, but to each their own.

BWCA Youtube video

In the same boat with this video....doing dishes in the lake and hacking on camp seating. Sigh. We were all young once and the wilderness puts up with us.
Hopefully these experiences lead them to develop a strong relationship with the BWCA. I am trying to stop watching random youtube videos so I don't get so cynical, but there are so many that keep popping up on the home feed! Definitely a powerful tool of the new generation...for good and bad.

First - judge not, lest ye be judged. Holy crap, if there was a video of my first BWCA trip ...

Second - let's lay out the options: move out into those whitecaps on Sag and activate the SOS.... oh wait...no InReach. Well, bob around and hope someone can save you.

OR, return to shore, calmly discuss the options thoroughly as a group, without cussing each other out, stomping off in a rage, and splitting up the group. Figure out the best plan you can that doesn't involve danger to your life or some YouTube-inspired bush craft project, and head out early and quietly.

I hope they return for the next six decades. And bless their hearts for doing their best without a dad, mom, scoutmaster or other to show them the way.

First impression…I mean I was pretty clueless my first trip…not that clueless but we learn as we go. I am glad I didn’t have a video of my first trip…if I did I certainly wouldn’t of advertised and put it on the web… especially advertising I broke the rules on entering :)

I mean they barely put in and expected to find a site???

The entry issue I can forgive…I could of paddled the lake no issue but better to turn back and be safe than capsize or camp in an illeagal spot. I think the FS would forgive them.

The longer I watched the more I liked them…younger people enjoying the wilderness, having fun, my ADD kicked in and couldn’t watch the whole thing but it seemed like they tried to follow the rules…minus the entry issue, but once again I think they took the lesser of two evils.

I liked that they kept and ate eater smallys…wish more people did that to help the fishery.

Good video footage and editing. Good job telling a story.

It looked like they ended up on that north site on Horseshoe. That's a nice site. It could be a western site on Government Island too. Hard to tell from where they pointed to a map in the video. Nice area though.

How about the fact that they went into the BWCA, then came back out and went back in the next day?

I don't have a serious problem with the entry point date change, on a different lake with fewer permits and campsites maybe but on Saganaga not so much.
The mix of gear was interesting, I bet they were used to river camping. The watermelon looked great.

I think the Forest Service would have a different opinion on entering the day after the designated date on the permit. They didn’t seem to know what they were doing was wrong. So what’s preventing them from doing it again?
