Pinetree: " I wonder with the northern lights how long did you stay up before crawling in the tent?"

Whenever I go camping with other people, at some point before the first night (usually as we are going to bed on the first night) I tell everyone I give them full permission to wake me up if they get up in the middle of the night and the northern lights are happening. And I also explain and give them permission to wake me up if they aren't even certain what they are seeing is the northern lights.

If someone is waking me up with the possibility of seeing the northern lights, I promise I won't be grumpy even if they are mistaken.

First picture is of me and a buddy on a winter trip a couple years ago. Tried for that "abducted by aliens" picture.

Second one is of me on Vista Lake on a September solo trip. A beautiful, crisp, autumn night."

Love the silhouettes

You get northern lights like that you look back and wonder why I crawled into the tent instead of staying up all night. A night to lay in the tent and look thru a screen window.

What great shots. I have only seen the lights twice while on trips over the past 49 years.

Here is another. I forgot about this one. Taken in 2002 Fish Stake Narrows I believe. I was a lot younger then.

Interesting new study just came out. Scientists have finally been able to confirm that the Norther Lights emit a sound on special cases. I am glad this has finally been confirmed as I have been lucky enough to hear them once back when I was 12 years old and on the farm in Western Minnesota. I remember the night was completly still and as I looked up and saw the lights swooshing above me, I could hear what sounded like the static between radio stations swooping in and out with the intensity of the lights. Glad to know that wasn't the moment I lost my mind. That came later.

What a tourist attraction in its own. Better than any fireworks show.

The Aurora is pretty good tonight at Fall Lake Landing near Winton. Quite a few people here photographing. It was better earlier I guess. I’ll wait around and see if they improve.

I was cold and tired but I waited them out. Photos are not as intense as the real thing!

Between 1:00am and 2:00am the display wasn’t as bright as theses photos but the pulsating was surrealistic! It looked like a high speed video of cumulus clouds going overhead and disappearing. The local Astro photographers told me this has been a great year for Aurora near Ely.
Predictions are for another show tonight but like all predictions some don’t always come true!

From the shore at Clearwater Lodge, Sunday 9/4 at about 2:30 AM. There was a lot of fog over the lake and I am pretty inexperienced with night photography in general and the controls on my camera specifically but, it seems like a kind of interesting shot.

This is the first time I have been able to bear looking at these photos. It is one of my biggest disappointments that I have lived for 77 years and have NEVER seen the northern lights! I would think that I have been in the right place many times, but not at the right time. How I envy those of you who have seen them even once, and to have had more than one sighting is just a blessing I cannot fathom.

Thanks for sharing.

It makes you think about what is really out there and how small the earth is compared to the whole universe.

Agree!
As Carl Sagan commented on the photo taken from Voyegeur spacecraft in 1990 of earth from 3.7 billion miles away.

RodPortage: "In my case, I woke up and saw the show through the tent screen. Like a siren song they lured me outside to stand on the shore in my underwear. For about 10min I stood there enjoying the show while this year's horrible crop of mosquitoes drained me of my blood. I probably watched for most of an hour from back inside the tent before I finally fell asleep. I hadn't seen them in 25 years, so this was a highlight of the trip."
many years ago on pipe lake we were getting destroyed by mosquitoes around the fire and decided to take our snifter of whiskey in the canoe. Our site faced south so we would have never looked up had those little buggers not been devouring us. Looking up from the lake as we paddled out into peace was a beautiful sight to behold.

With the universe so large there has to be life out there somewhere. Who knows what kind of fish swim in a lake far far away.

Pictures like that are worth many BWCA trips alone. Also, Star pictures or Northern lights are mystic. To me, I know someone is out there on some of those stars. It feels like something spiritual stirs inside you

I remember once the whole sky flashed all night long with northern lights of many colors. My problem is I have no photos.

Let's see some stars and northern lights. In many areas it is tough to see a lot of stars because of artificial light pollution.

In my case, we were already in our tents avoiding the mosquitoes and playing Eucher. Went out to go to the bathroom and saw the NL. Watched them for an hour or so, took pictures. Great way to end a trip!!!

Nothing can beat the northern lights! I've seen a couple minor displays but never photographed them in the bwca.

This is Orion from a frozen Sawbill lake several winters ago.

Taken from the island site on Tuscarora Lake last Saturday night. We had amazing northern lights Sat, Sun & Mon night. It was already a bucket-list trip without the night sky show and it made the trip incredibly special.
