The year of thin ice

I know around Brainerd we have around 10-12 inches now vs the avg. of 30 inches. Same I hgear from BWCA people.

The phrase that jumps out at me from the article is "I've never seen" (ice this thin at this time of year).

Just this season I've never seen 80 degree temps in November or record snowfall in November or my local large river "flash freeze" in 3 days in December or a winter with constant thaws or a January where it stayed above freezing even at night (I'm in southern Michigan).

With thin ice we can be smart but I think it may be more challenging to be smart about a barrage of weather conditions that you've never seen before!

Thanks for the good reminder, Pinetree. We lost a veteran ice fisherman this past weekend and had a lucky lady and her puppy rescued by a another ice fisherman yesterday down here on the Madison chain of lakes. The first gentleman was likely disoriented in a snow squall and ATVed too close to a river inlet. The woman had already taken a safe walk with the dog and then ventured back out in a less familiar spot (also near an inlet) to wear out the pup.

As long as someone is smart, I think it's a nice break from the usual 2-3' of ice. Easy and quick to drill through, less gas or batteries needed.

one must be an educated idiot , one year i walked out with a PFD on and threw a freshly sharpened chisel with each step , and then followed my footsteps back when i left ;)

Been making ice in Ely area the past few days. Have had a couple -30's mornings in Babbitt the past few days.
