Sun rising on cool calm water. Misty quietness greeting our day. Repetitive strokes become automatic, sure, measured. Paddles syncing in unison. No talking necessary, we contemplate natures stunning beauty surrounding us. Each enjoying what’s special to them.

Every once in a while a glance at the map to keep oriented and on course. A finger point to the other canoes signaling direction. Gliding silently, gently into the wilderness then to the shoreline. Happy for the torturous trail and wind blowing our direction.

The portage revives my legs, bringing on salty sweat dripping into my eyes as the canoe grinds into my shoulders. I’m so glad we now portage in one pass! Teamwork, all knowing their tasks without words. Loaded and back on the water we settle back into our meditative paddling. Portages repeated as necessary.

The fresh air, the mossy pine scents, the dirt and grit ground into our hands. Smoky meals tasting so much better than anything cooked at home. Mmmm, walleye and fried potatoes topped off with fresh tinfoil baked walnut brownies for supper. We are thankful.

The mosquito bites, sun burn, sore muscles, and back aches all included at no extra charge but well worth the effort. Wilderness competency achieved.

Utterly spent at the days end but energized by the laughter, the campfire and camaraderie. Stories to be cherished and retold for a lifetime.

Finally, crawling into our sleeping bags listening to the loons haunting, soothing serenade echoing among the lakes and forest.

Satisfaction. Serenity. Perfection.
Deep sleep…
